Three out of four Americans under 30 — or a huge 73 percent — support same-sex marriage equality, as do approximately 50 percent of those between the ages of 30 and 64.
And gay people are far more knowledgable about gay marriage support than heterosexuals, according to the new Gallup poll, which reveals 56 percent of LGBT Americans believe most Americans support same-sex marriage — which is correct — while only 30 percent of Americans overall believe the majority of Americans support same sex marriage.
The new poll, just released by Gallup in conjunction with USA Today, once again finds that the majority of Americans support same-sex marriage, 53 percent, with 46 percent opposing. Support is now tied for an all-time high.
Unsurprisingly, but important that Americans are aware, Gallup reports in “Religion Big Factor for Americans Against Same-Sex Marriage,” that 47 percent of those who oppose marriage equality most often cite the “Bible” or “religion” as their top reason for opposing the right of same-sex couples to marry.
That 47 percent translates into a mere one in five Americans overall.
Twenty percent of those opposed say, simply, “Marriage should be between a man and woman,” sixteen percent say same-sex marriage is “morally wrong” or cite their own “traditional beliefs.” Other reasons cited by a small minority include the mistaken beliefs that “civil unions are sufficient,” same-sex marriage is “unnatural” or “against laws of nature,” or that marriage equality “undermines traditional family structure” of a mother and father.
Bottom line, most Americans support marriage equality, a finding that almost every major poll has reported for the past three years, and those who oppose civil same-sex marriage have no legal basis for doing so.
