The two-year old Kentucky girl who was accidentally shot by her five-year old brother with a Crickett brand “My First Rifle” survived for “more than an hour” as paramedics worked to save her life, according to a local CBS affiliate, WKYT.
The report focused on the local community who joined together in prayer, and a local pastor trying to help the family, the community, and first responders heal.
But in a quick nod to those first responders, WKYT reporter Phil Pendleton notes the local pastor, “has also been counseling first responders, and those who work at [indiscernible] hospital, who worked more than an hour, feverishly, trying to save the little girl’s life.”
This story is tragic, and has touched many around the world. While the family of course must be devastated, why is there is no call for charges to be filed against the parents for negligence and child abuse?

While the loss of their two-year old daughter may be more punishment than anyone might ask, a legal statement, a public determination of negligence, might work toward ensuring this doesn’t ever happen again.
Of course, it will happen again, and again, and again, because as much as we’re told by gun manufacturers through their wholly-partisan mouthpiece, the NRA, that background checks don’t work, that law-abiding gun owners should have no restrictions placed on them, that the problem isn’t access to to guns, or too many guns in this country, the fact is that a tiny two-year old girl was shot and, we have to assume, suffered, for “more than an hour” before she died, negligence was involved, and the two-year old girl’s five-year old brother will have to live with that for the rest of his life.
Who could possibly not call that child abuse?
Where are all the so-called “pro-life” activists who call abortion murder, but are ignoring the death of this small girl? Why are they not demanding justice?
Why do they not think this life is not as important as those that are aborted, since they believe life begins at conception?

Our thoughts are with this family and community, but our sadness cannot outweigh our desire to ensure accidents, like this, stop happening.
According to the Children’s Defense Fund, a child or teen dies or is injured from guns every 30 minutes.
More children and teens die from guns every three days than died in the Newtown massacre.
Guns kill more children under 5 than law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
Children and teens in the U.S. are 67 times more likely to die from guns than children and teens in the United Kingdom and 13 times more likely than children and teens in France.
In 2010, 7 children and teens died every day from guns, 2,694 children and teens died from guns.
Where are all the “pro-life” activists?
When would be the right time to talk about this?
Perhaps tomorrow, Sunday, which is NRA Youth Day.
