19-Year Old Gay Teen’s Suicide: Part 4 – Evangelical Christian Edition

All last week we discussed the tragic story of Zach Harrington, the nineteen-year old Norman, Oklahoma teen who succumbed to suicide shortly after listening to his fellow Norman neighbors rail against homosexuality for three hours at a city council town hall meeting. The meeting was called to debate a proclamation honoring October as “Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender History Month” in Norman.

In part one of “19-Year Old Gay Teen’s Suicide,” you’ll remember we met “Mr. Slippery Slope.” Here’s what “Mr. Slippery Slope” says will happen, merely by approving a proclamation honoring LGBTQ history month:

Homosexuality will be “infiltrated” into the schools, schools will be forced to teach about how people came out, there will be pictures of gay sex shown to children in school, “recruiting children into these lifestyles will be very easy,” hate crimes laws will be passed to discriminate against anyone who speaks out about homophobia, the bible will be banned, the bible will be called a hate book, clergy will be put in jail…

Then, in part two we heard another Norman citizen say, “The love that dare not speak its name has become the love that never shuts up.” He then compared the proclamation for “Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender History Month” to a proclamation for “wife-swapping.”

Part three was no less disturbing. In it, we heard a citizen of Norman who thinks that there is no difference between gays and adulterers, fornicators, bigamists, thieves, and so on. He says, “treating people equally is the same as treating all moral behavior equally.” Because, to him, “gay” equals “sexually immoral behavior.”

Today, I thought I’d share with you the comments of a few Norman residents who use the bible and their Evangelical Christian faith, despite claiming to “love everyone,” to shroud themselves in an anti-gay cloak of hate and homophobia.

Meet Mr. “Clear Thinking,” followed by one of the few actual “clear-thinking citizens of Norman.

Once again, I invite anyone from Norman to contact me to share their thoughts on the proclamation, and on the life and death of Zach Harrington.
