The lowest temperature ever recorded in the state of Wyoming was -66 degrees, in 1933. This Thanksgiving at the Cheney ranch, just outside of Jackson Hole, it may indeed feel that chilly again.
Yesterday, water-boarding defender Liz Cheney had a chat with Fox News, perfectly timed to put the holidays on ice. Cheney, a Republican U.S. Senate hopeful, told “Fox News Sunday” that she does not support same-sex marriage (morals, you know,) despite having happily attended her sister Mary’s wedding to Heather Poe.

Liz is a 47-year old Tea Party political activist and (former) professional Islamaphobe, who was forced to pay a fine for lying about the length of time she’s lived in Wyoming — for a fishing license, no less.
The daughter of the former Vice President on Sunday said that while she doesn’t “believe we ought to discriminate against people because of their sexual orientation,” she does “believe in the traditional definition of marriage.” (Those points of view are not in conflict, are they?)
“If people are in a same-sex relationship and they want their partner to be able to have health benefits or be designated as a beneficiary on their life insurance, there’s no reason we shouldn’t do that,” said Cheney, whose attempt to unseat now-former friend of the family, Wyoming U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, has been an absolute circus. “I also doesn’t support amending the constitution on this issue,” she added. “I do believe it’s an issue that got to be left up to the states. I do believe in the traditional definition of marriage. Listen, I love Mary very much. I love her family very much. This is just an issue on which we disagree.”
Yes, “just an issue on which we disagree.” Like, sausage or oyster stuffing. Apple or pumpkin pie. Equality or discrimination. Just issues on which they disagree.
Liz’s younger sister Mary has been the dutiful family member, keeping quiet all these years, occasionally accepting her parents’ support of her relationship with Poe, but rarely appearing in public or doing anything activist.
Apparently, Poe, however had had enough, and did what everyone does when there’s a family feud: she took to Facebook.
“I was watching my sister-in-law on Fox News Sunday (yes Liz, in fifteen states and the District of Columbia you are my sister-in-law) and was very disappointed to hear her say ‘I do believe in the traditional definition of marriage,'” Poe wrote on Facebook. Liz has been slammed for carpetbagging — attempting to run for office by recently buying a house in Wyoming to declare residency there.
“Liz has been a guest in our home, has spent time and shared holidays with our children, and when Mary and I got married in 2012 – she didn’t hesitate to tell us how happy she was for us.
“To have her now say she doesn’t support our right to marry is offensive to say the least,” Poe wrote.
“I can’t help but wonder how Liz would feel if as she moved from state to state, she discovered that her family was protected in one but not the other,” Poe continued — totally slamming Cheney for carpetbagging.
“I always thought freedom meant freedom for EVERYONE.”
Touché!, Poe. That last line she wrote was taken from Dick Cheney, who, way back in 2009 said, “freedom means freedom for everyone.” He and Mary’s mother both support marriage equality. Liz is the only family member who does not, which should make next Thursday a great deal of fun, especially if Heather and Mary bring their two children to the ranch.
Mary Cheney shared her wife’s comment on Facebook.
“Couldn’t have said it better myself,” Mary wrote.
“Liz – this isn’t just an issue on which we disagree – you’re just wrong – and on the wrong side of history.”
