In in Sochi, Russia, uniformed and undercover plainclothes police today detained ten LGBT activists who were protesting Vladimir Putin’s war on gays, and the Russian president’s recent ban on public rallies near the Olympics. Reports state the police held the activists for about four hours.

Among the protestors was the highly-controversial activist Nikolai Alexeyev, who just posted on social media sites:

All 10 LGBT activists arrested at Sochi Olympics HQ in Moscow released from police. All charged with unsanctioned event, facing big fines.

Putin’s ban on rallies and protests doesn’t go into effect until a few weeks before the start of next year’s winter Olympics.

As you can see in the video, the protestors were not in large groups, they were holding pro-LGBT posters, and police — uniformed and undercover — came up, sometimes ripping their signs, and threw them into a police bus.
