Watch: Nevada Senator Comes Out, Tells Colleagues ‘I’m Gay’ During Marriage Debate

Late Monday night during a contentious debate over a same-sex marriage bill, Nevada state senator Kelvin Atkinson stood up and announced, “I’m gay,” for the very first time publicly. Atkinson, a Democrat, said he was not even going to speak on the bill, but felt he had to.

“I’m black, I’m gay, I have dealt with a lot of what you folks are talking about. I know some of you first time hearing me say that, that I am a black gay male.”

Atkinson added, “I’ve heard some people say some nasty, ugly things, because they didn’t know that” he’s gay.

The bill passed by a vote of 12-9.

Atkinson also told his colleagues that he was disappointed by some of their comments to him about the bill, not knowing that he is gay, and he added, if this bill hurts your marriage, your marriage was in trouble before the bill.

It makes me so happy to see this man have the courage to tell his colleagues he's gay. It makes me feel good.
