Watch: Bill Maher: “The Tea Party Isn’t a Movement, It’s a Cult”

by David Badash on February 20, 2010

in Politics

Only 2% of the people in a “movement” about taxes named after a tax revolt have the slightest idea what’s going on…with taxes.

On this season’s premiere of “Real Time,” Bill Maher used the last portion of “New Rules” to go after the “Tea Party.”

“They’re a cult, and I’m going to prove it.”

He does.

Bill hit the nail on the head. These people are such hypocrits – we know it and they know it. Their freedoms are not being taken away, nor their guns, nor capitalism, nor individual freedoms so what are they complaining about? Obama – full stop! They're a joke and as Arnold said today, will go nowhere. You betcha!

Hypocrites? Capitalism is being killed at every corner and freedoms are being taken away at every other corner. What exactly do you call the government taking control of our largest businesses? What are you going to call it when the whitehouse has to bail out the state of California, cause its coming?
What do you call it when we borrow Tillions of dollars from our own Fed?

We are slowly turning into the very thing that we fought to break free from……….the European governmental system. There is a reason this country became so powerful and become the place that everyone in the world would have died to come to. Socialism certainly wasnt one of those things…..Taxing the people to death wasnt one of those things.

Wow. I suppose facts aren’t exactly important to you. Capitalism, which by the way, isn’t written anywhere in the Constitution, isn’t being killed. The federal bailouts were necessary because if they didn’t happen we would have sunk into the greatest depression this country has ever seen. The bailouts saved millions of jobs. Possibly yours or your neighbor’s. Which means that someone in your neighborhood probably didn’t lose their house. Which means that the value of your house didn’t go down. Not to mention the human cost of another great depression. Countless thousands, if not millions would have lost jobs, lost homes, been unable to buy food, would have had to go on welfare, get food stamps, increasing federal spending on those programs, raising your taxes even more. Oh yeah, and many, many people would have died as a result. I suppose those issues are unimportant to you. You didn’t seem to mention any concern of the human cost on your fact-less response.

Then there is fact that for 95% of Americans, taxes were actually brought down by Obama. Yet another fact the Tea Party seems to conveniently ignore.

The Tea Party isn’t a party. It isn’t a movement. It’s a bunch of ill-informed bigots who hate things they think they understand. They’re being used by the GOP and they are an embarassment to Americans who are trying to make this country better.

Anyone who doesn’t see the destruction the Tea Party has caused isn’t seeing reality.

Taxes buy freedom. They buy roads and schools and pay teachers’ salaries, and create things like the Internet that all the Tea Party folks use to spread their hatred and ignorance. You’re not being taxed to death.

You are being rhetoric-ed and ignoranced to death.

The one thing I will credit them with is taking action. Too many don’t. But action based on ignorance and hatred and bigotry is just as dangerous, if not more so, than inaction.

Go read a few books. Think about your fellow neighbors, your family, and theirs.

Yes, we are our brothers’ keepers. We are morally obligated to help those who need it.

What jobs did the bailout save? There is no proof we would have gone into a depression. That was your liberal talking point. UNABLE TO BUY FOOD??? and lives saved by the bailout??? wow I didn't know the savior had saved so many lives.
a bigot??? we are bigots because we disagree with this administration's views.
TAXES BUY FREEDOM-WHAT AN ASININE STATEMENT.
YOU NEED TO READ A BOOK AND GET MY FELLOW NEIGHBOR'S HANDS OUT OF POCKETS.
David, why dont you sell you car and house and give them your money.

"The Tea Party isn't a party. It isn't a movement." -David Badash

On the other hand, a robust Tea Party movement could split Republican primary races, leading to weaker candidates, & could split the vote in the actual election between Republicans & independent conservatives. E.g., Ross Perot in 1992.
