Planned Parenthood has finally taken legal action against the anti-abortion activists who released highly edited undercover videos purporting to show abortion doctors engaged in the sale on fetal tissue for profit. Planned Parenthood admits it enabled women to donate fetal tissue for medical research, but steadfastly denies it "sells baby parts" or has done anything illegal.
The National Organization of Planned Parenthood and Planned Parenthood California filed suit today against the Center for Medical Progress, Biomax Procurement Services, David Daleiden, (aka Ro Bertsarkis)Troy Newman, Albin Rhomberg, Phillip S. Cronin, Sandra Merritt, (aka “Susan Tenenbaum”) Gerardo Lopez and "unknown co-conspirators." The women's health organization claims the defendants have violated the laws of three states and federal law.
Dawn Laguens, Planned Parenthood’s executive vice president, told reporters the Center for Medical Progress has “colluded with right-wing state legislators and members of Congress” in attempting to discredit Planned Parenthood.
“The complaint we filed today, names for the first time, the key individuals behind this fraud," said Ms. Laguens. "They are some of the nation’s most extreme anti-abortion activists."
In response to the lawsuit, defendant David Daleiden, who released ten of the so-called "fetal tissue" videos, said a statement, “Game on.”
“I look forward to deposing all the CEOs, Medical Directors, and their co-conspirators who participated in Planned Parenthood's illegal baby body parts racket,” Daleiden said.
In their complaint, the Planned Parenthood announced it is seeking compensatory, statutory and punitive damages, but say they are still assessing damages in the case.
