Melissa Gilbert, who grew up in front of our eyes playing Laura Ingalls Wilder on the 70s TV blockbuster Little House on the Prairie, has decided to run for congress.
Melissa announced today that she will challenge incumbent freshman Republican Mike Bishop in Michigan's 8th District, where she and her husband, actor Timothy Busfield, (photo below) live.
(You might remember Timothy Busfield as Washington Post reporter Danny Concannon on the West Wing.)
"Here in Michigan, I know people are doing their best to make a good life for themselves and their families," Melissa said in her announcement. "When it comes down to it, I think that's what we all really want."
"I'm running for Congress to make life a little easier for all the families who feel they have fallen through the cracks in today's economy," Melissa said in her announcement. "I believe building a new economy is a team effort, and we need to bring fresh voices to the table to get the job done."
This is Melissa's first run for elected office, but she did serve as president of the Screen Actor's Guild from 2001 to 2005.
