Gay Trump Supporters Plan ‘Deplorable Pride’ Protest Before Charlotte’s Pride Parade
Group Cites Persecution From ‘Own Gay Community’
Deplorable Pride, a group of gay Republicans and supporters of Donald Trump, are planning a protest ahead of this weekend’s Charlotte Pride in North Carolina.
“Join us in Charlotte North Carolina on August 27th,†the group’s website reads. “Come and show your support for your fellow Trump supporters who are LGBT and are being persecuted by their own gay community. Help us show them that WE ALL STAND UNITED!â€
The protest is a response to Charlotte Pride’s decision to bar Deplorable Pride’s pro-Donald Trump entry into the event’s parade. “I’m very proud of my country, proud of my president, and was once proud of my community,†Brian Talbert, co-founder of the group, told his local Fox affiliate in June. “I’m very proud of my vote. I don’t regret my vote. I will vote for Donald Trump again.â€
In defense of their decision, Charlotte Pride advised that the event “reserves the right to decline participation at our events to groups or organizations which do not reflect the mission, vision and values of our organization.â€
Deplorable Pride’s website noted that they will meet ahead of the parade, currently scheduled for Sunday afternoon, calling for a “non-confrontational peaceful demonstration showing that you stand with your fellow Trump supporters.â€
“EVERYONE IS INCLUDED AT OUR EVENT,†the group asserted. “REGARDLESS OF YOUR POLITICAL VIEWS! WE ARE TRULY ALL INCLUSIVE.â€
Last year, the Charlotte Pride event had an estimated 130,000 visitors over the course of its celebratory weekend, a new record for the organization. Similar numbers are expected at this year’s offering.
Pride Month officially came to a close in June. This year, Donald Trump and his White House opted to ignore the contributions and struggles of LGBT Americans, even after marriage equality and the Pulse Massacre.
