“He Couldn’t Care Less”
Early Saturday, the entire state of Hawaii was advised to seek immediate shelter due to an inbound ballistic missile. It took the state nearly 40 minutes to issue an official correction for the “false alarm,” and now the president has issued his first statement in the incident’s aftermath.
Having returned from his latest round of golf this afternoon, Donald Trump took to Twitter not to offer comfort to Hawaiians who literally feared for their lives as they awoke – but to attack Michael Wolff's bombshell tell-all book "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House” and the free press at large.
“So much Fake News is being reported. They don’t even try to get it right, or correct it when they are wrong,” Trump tweeted, completely ignoring his own tendencies and mere flirtations with the truth. “They promote the Fake Book of a mentally deranged author, who knowingly writes false information. The Mainstream Media is crazed that WE won the election!”

The lack of empathy for U.S. citizens was noted by Twitter users:
No reference to what happened in #Hawaii, no "Going to investigate so does not happen again"?? Where is the leadership in all this?— Sonia Esparza (@SEcorona12) January 13, 2018
HAWAII ???????????????????— meydey (@meydey0) January 13, 2018
This is your first tweet after the Hawaii incident. Are you serious?? You have no sense of what is important.— Ron Shaw (@RonShaw80) January 13, 2018
That should totally reassure the people of Hawaii your Royal Highness. Go back to golfing— Shea Cameron (@sheacameron) January 13, 2018
This is Trump’s first public statement since the Hawaii false alarm. It’s about Michael Wolff’s book. https://t.co/Co5j7fwsEH— Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1) January 13, 2018
Attack the media & their right to free speech while spending the day golfing during a crisis in Hawaii that shook Americans to the core. Trump is not prepared to steer Americans incase that 3am phone call does ever occur. https://t.co/quNw43yJsj— Simar (@sahluwal) January 13, 2018
Trump hasn’t said anything about Hawaii. He was golfing when the false alarm went off, and just kept on golfing. He didn’t reassure the thousands of people who undoubtedly are still in a strange shock/panic. Wouldn’t expect anything more from him, but still. Just let that sink in— āmɑɳda (@__amnda_) January 13, 2018
Not only is Trump a failed President, he failed the people of Hawaii, all the U.S. Service people stationed there...— Tim (@SupermanHotMale) January 13, 2018
He failed all of the families who have relatives and service members stationed there.
Trump is an utter #Failure
Trump's first tweet since the mistake missile alert in Hawaii. He couldn't care less. https://t.co/pCC42tuaC8— Patricia McGahan (@BeachcomberNC) January 13, 2018
Prior to the tweet, one user made this astute observation:
Panicked Hawaiians were fleeing for shelter after the false missile alert.— Adam Best (@adamcbest) January 13, 2018
Donald Trump still hasn’t chimed in to provide any leadership at all.
Too busy golfing?
Or doesn’t care because Hawaii is a blue state with a non-white majority?
Also of note:
Following the false alert in Hawaii, the White House released a statement advising that Trump had been briefed on the matter. “This was purely a state exercise," deputy press secretary Lindsay Walters wrote.
