By now, practically all of America has heard that Michael Sam on Saturday was picked by the St. Louis Rams, making him the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL. And by now, you’ve probably seen the photo of Sam tearfully kissing his boyfriend upon hearing the news, seen the video of them sharing an emotional kiss, and maybe even seen the video of Sam smearing cake into his boyfriend’s face, then kissing him.

The AP observes:

Producer Seth Markman, who oversees NFL draft coverage for ESPN, said that in the extensive preparation for Sam’s possible draft, “we never had one discussion about, ‘What if he’s drafted, his partner’s there and they kiss?’ Honestly, it never came up.”

He suggested a possible generational split over how much it matters.

“When I got home last night and saw the attention (it was receiving), it kind of threw me,” he said. “We’re a young production crew and quite honestly it was just another moment in the years we’ve done this.”

“In the truck, we were only saying, ‘Wow, this is great emotion here.’ No one stepped up and said, ‘Oh, wow, do we really want to be showing this?’”

But clearly some on the right are furious.

Dolphins second-year player Don Jones tweeted, “OMG” and “horrible.” He later deleted those tweets, and yesterday was fined and will undergo sensitivity training.

Former Giants running back Derrick Ward went on a Twitter tirade, calling Michael Sam “no bueno,” describing the kiss as “disgusting,” while claiming it didn’t “matter if he’s gay or not. I could careless,” although he reportedly also deleted this tweet:

In fact, many unknown people also went on Twitter tirades, often invoking religion and anger that kids were watching TV. A great many also compared the support Michael Sam has been getting, including the emotional kiss he shared with his boyfriend, to the disdain many on the left had for former Denver Broncos and NY Jets quarterback Tim Tebow’s religion-infused behavior.

Take a look:

Poor Tim Tebow… his life must be full of hardships, disadvantages and people denying him equality because he's a heterosexual, Christian, white male.

I must have missed Tim Tebow being beheaded and fed to lions… can we get an instant replay on that?

They need to grow up and seek professional mental help.

Whiny. Whiny. Whiny. Christians slaughtered over 100 million native North Americans. Where's the ethical outrage for that holocaust?

Tim Tebow sux as a football player so why is anyone even talking about him. I am glad everyone is pissed off about Michael Sam, and the reason is when i was growing up gay i thought i couldnt play sports or do anything manly because i was gay and this is how straight people made me feel, but now kids growin up gay will know for a fact they can do ANYTHING that a straight guy can do.

Maybe everyone should just be gay and mankind will cease to exist. Sounds good to me!

Or, even better, reproductive ingenuity would prevail in an all-LGBT world, and the new generations of (mostly hetero) people will have been raised by LGBT parents and grandparents.

I don't know if that is true about Tim Tebow or not, If it is then i think that was very wrong of anyone for downing him for it. While i'm not a religious person, I will stand up and say that anyone has the right to believe in God. Straight or Gay. But to these people who are posting all these nasty comments on here. well should really just be ashamed…. I'm a proud gay man and to throw that F word around so much just proves how much further this country has to go. So to Michael i say Congrats and keep on pushing on, And to Tim i would like to offer my apologies for the ignorance of some of our fellow countrymen… Truly i am sorry if you were treated like that.

Ok, let's see… Derrick Ward whines about not being able to express himself without being frowned upon after frowning upon someone else's expression. Ok.

Well, at least if Ryan followed through, he won't be posting tweets anymore
