Post image for Pope: Gay Marriage Threatens “The Future of Humanity Itself”

Pope Benedict XVI today stated that gay marriage was one of a number of practices that “undermine the family, threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself.” The 84-year old pontiff unleashed his remarks, seen as the strongest to date against same-sex marriage, in his annual “State of the World” address delivered to Vatican diplomats from 179 countries.

“The family unit is fundamental for the educational process and for the development both of individuals and states; hence there is a need for policies which promote the family and aid social cohesion and dialogue,” Benedict told the diplomats, according to Reuters.

The Pope added that children need to be educated in proper “settings,” and that “pride of place goes to the family, based on the marriage of a man and a woman,” Reuters reported:

“This is not a simple social convention, but rather the fundamental cell of every society. Consequently, policies which undermine the family threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself,” he said.

The Vatican and Catholic officials around the world have protested against moves to legalize gay marriage in Europe and other developed parts of the world.

One leading opponent of gay marriage in the United States is New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan, whom the pope will elevate to cardinal next month.

Dolan fought against gay marriage before it became legal in New York state last June, and in September he sent a letter to President Barack Obama criticizing his administration’s decision not to support a federal ban on gay marriage.

In that letter Dolan, who holds the powerful post of president of the U.S. Bishops Conference, said such a policy could “precipitate a national conflict between church and state of enormous proportions.”

Vatican Radio released the full statement, which includes this excerpt:

In addition to a clear goal, that of leading young people to a full knowledge of reality and thus of truth, education needs settings. Among these, pride of place goes to the family, based on the marriage of a man and a woman. This is not a simple social convention, but rather the fundamental cell of every society. Consequently, policies which undermine the family threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself. The family unit is fundamental for the educational process and for the development both of individuals and States; hence there is a need for policies which promote the family and aid social cohesion and dialogue.

It is urgent to educate the public about the Catholic Church's financial motivations for perpetuating anti-gay bigotry. Historically, by stigmatizing gays, the Church has been able to make them feel hopeless and thus to get them to sign on for lifetimes of virtual slave labor in the Church. The Church is not only anti-gay but also misogynist. The nuns get hidden away doing the worst of the dirty work. Marriage equality *strengthens* the family. When heterosexual parents, siblings, uncles, aunts, cousins et cetera include their same sex married relatives in the wider circles of love of their whole families, the family is *strengthened.* When gay people are stigmatized and rejected by their families because of ugly Catholic anti-gay bigotry, the family is *weakened.*

It goes far b eyond that scott. When you rachet up the fear (a progenitor of hate), the people contribute more money.

The church is broke. Both from billions in lawsuits it has paid re the endless hidden molestation of children.
And the fact that in Europe, attendance at mass is about 15% (per EWTN catholic TV) re France, and news reports say its similar,e g 13% in Spain etc etc.

Why is the church in desperate trouble eg in Spain – well the church teamed with the fascist Franco during the spanish civil war. Franco brought in the Nazi air force, Madrid was heavily bombed etc etc.

Those kinds of things dont get forgotten. Fascism and Machiavelli came from italy. Did the church learn it from italy, or did Italy learn it from the church. ?

Is same sex marriage a threat to anyone? Nope. Is the Roman Catholic church a threat to civilization? Yup. Apart, that is, from the ridiculous fabrications on which it is based which are probably no sillier or malicious than in other faiths. And, happily for us all, modern secular governments no longer permit the Roman church to exercise its traditional responses to difference: torture and mass murder. In their persistent vanity, malice and wilful ignorance, it still insists that its dogma be imposed by law on everyone else. Among their destructive doctrines are mindless opposition to birth control and abortion, resulting in the impoverishment and disintegation of families and communities.

It is the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church which threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself.

I have begun a petition at entitled "Withdraw U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See", calling on the President and Secretary of State Clinton to make good on the declaration made on behalf of the US Government last month in front of the UN in support of LGBT rights, by withdrawing the US Ambassador to the Holy See in diplomatic protest.

If you agree, please sign and spread word of the petition. An email is automatically sent to the press office of the State Department each time a signature is added.

I love that an unmarried ex-Nazi in a blousy white bejeweled dress, ruby slippers and a pointy hat has the gall to attack gay people. He looks like the evil emperor from a gay remake of Star Wars. Oh well I guess the Catholic church wants all the gay fun to itself.

Actually, the pope said no such thing. Check this:

I'm no defender, but if we're going to rant and rave about something, let's make sure it's based in reality first.

StanleyJames January 18, 2012 at 12:19 am

unately chris – polls I've seen say that 95-97% of catholics ignore the church "teachings" re birth u0w

StanleyJames January 18, 2012 at 12:06 am

So the pope says gay marriage … threatens the future of humanity.

Knowing full well that many people will see those words as "gays threaten the future of humanity.

You know when our gay friends are winning – when the rehtoric goes crazy.

the only question is how much more human suffereing, bashing, and yes murders will be provoked by the pope's words.

Or is he blameless, and going altsheimers – where usually the first sign is regression to ones childhood

Which for him was in Nazi Germany.

BTW the latest RC Bs is that gay marriage takes away their religious freedom. Well, back in 1933 the VAtican got relgiious freedom ,eg to put crosses in schools, teach their bibles in schools etc.

In return, see what the chruch did for the german govt

So the pope says gay marriage … threatens the future of humanity. knowing well that many people will take it as 'gays threaten humanity"

Let the bashings and hate etc reach a new zenith.

thats how the church protects life – its smokescreen for its own horrible crimes.

BTw thats similar to the old Love the sinner , hate the sin. Whoever cooked that one up knows well that it will be interpreted by many as

Hate the sinner.

they choose to ignore the fact of Separation of Church and State, we are not a christian country, we are a FREE country. I am the founder of my own church, legally recognized and of course, as a gay man, we accept the fact that god loves us all unconditionally, marriage has always been a contract between 2 people, in the old days a woman's family had to basically PAY for a husband and a lot of times was married off without her even seeing her husband, is that for the sanctity of a family, just like times have changed and for the most part the old types of marriage no longer exist, has it made for a weaker family structure? NO – their reasoning is always flawed, always will be, no matter how you counter their responses, they will turn it around to their benefit, hmmm how very right winged is that – I am doing all that I can to keep speaking out in favor of gay marriage and for the separation of church and state and use my church to stand my ground, I'm even trying to organize a huge mass "Marriage" during our local gay pride celebration

The true message of love is do your best to help the good things and stop the bad things-out of the billions of species that "GOD" has created, heterosexuality is rare and "GOD" did not make a mistake. Spreading hate towards the GLBT community has caused teens to commit suicide and has promoted hate crimes. The pope is personally responsible for GLBT suicides and should be charged with hate crimes, and everyone should be made aware that the Vatican bank is a major stockholder in the weapons industry which has caused so many deaths in and of that itself. why would "GOD" create things like snails for example which have both genders….Is the pope going to try to kill billions of species because of ignorant, hateful, ideas?

wyocowboy62 May 16, 2012 at 7:30 am

I can't believe this idot that talks about same-sex marriage but its ok for him to hide pediphials…he has NO RIGHT TO TALK ABOUT SAME-SEX MARRIAGE…religion has NO CLUE AS TO WHAT IS GOOD FOR HUMANITY….look at all the killings not only done in history but continue to do today and I am not just talking about the middle east…I am talking world wide…every kid that kills themself because they are glbtq is due to relgion…the blood of these children are on religions hands….they need to watch the movie "Prayer for Bobby"…
