The radical right wing anti-gay, anti-choice, anti-pornography, anti-stem cell research, anti-women organization Concerned Women for America now has as its official policy that ObamaCare will destroy the American family.
“As the nation’s largest public policy women’s group, Concerned Women for America has been sounding the alarm about how the fiscal health of the nation and economic crises are affecting America’s families,” Janice Shaw Crouse, a Senior Fellow of Concerned Women for America’s “think tank,” the Beverly LaHaye Institute, writes at The American Thinker – a far right wing website.
(By the way, I’d like to publicly state I do not believe Crouse’s claim that Concerned Women for America is “the nation’s largest public policy women’s group,” and I think if they make that claim they should be forced to prove or rescind it.)
Crouse claims, “we are discovering that ObamaCare really will ‘destroy marriage for the middle class the same way that the Great Society welfare state destroyed the black family — with financial incentives for staying single.’ ObamaCare’s marriage penalty could possibly cost couples over $10,000 a year. This intentional disparity means that U.S. government policy will encourage singleness and create increased disincentives for marriage. Single individuals will have an advantage with the earned income tax credit as well as welfare benefits, including food stamps. This comes as no surprise, of course, because ‘making the subsidies neutral towards marriage would lead to a married couple with only one bread-winner getting a more generous subsidy than a single parent at the same income-level.’”
Of course, you’ll be shocked to learn that this is total, utter hogwash. But you’ll actually be shocked to learn that Crouse, who has written that the Supreme Court’s decision on DOMA will lead to a “bleak future” including “imprisonment” for Christians, actually is basing her argument that ObamaCare will destroy marriage on a 2010 article by a lesbian advocating for the repeal of DOMA. In other words, hogwash, and outdated hogwash at that.
Miranda Blue at Right Wing Watch notes Crouse also bases her false ObamaCare accusation “on a bogus GOP talking point about the health care law’s supposed ‘marriage penalty’ (if you care to read a full debunking, Igor Volsky has one here). This is all, Crouse alleges, a nefarious plot for ‘promoting single motherhood and discouraging marriage’ in order to increase the number of single women, who tend to vote overwhelmingly for Democrats.”
Regular readers will remember that in 2011, Crouse falsely claimed gays die 20 years younger, commit suicide three times the average rate, are prone to syphilis and anal cancer, and cannot maintain long term relationships. Also in 2011, Crouse also said Sarah Palin “is an outstanding woman who will be an excellent role model for the nation’s young people.”
Crouse, when not falsifying statistics about LGBT people, actually had time to write a few books: Children at Risk: The Precarious State of Children’s Well-Being in America, and Marriage Matters: Perspectives on the Private and Public Importance of Marriage.
