A vigil is being held tonight, Saturday, at midnight, in New York City’s Greenwich Village, in response to the anti-gay hate crime murder of Mark Carson, the 32-year old gay man who was shot in the head and killed very early this morning.

“The gunman murdered the openly gay Carson after calling him and a friend ‘f—–s’ and ‘gay wrestlers,’ officials and sources said,” the NY Daily News reports:

The suspected shooter — who earlier flashed his gun at a bartender and venue manager — is now in custody, but police are still looking for the two friends he was with prior to the shooting.

Mark Carson was shot point-blank in Greenwich Village on Friday night by an unidentified gunman.

The Daily News also published this photo they say is of Mark Carson, via Facebook:

Contrary to published reports at CNN and other media outlets this becomes the fifth incidence of anti-gay violence this month in New York City.

CNN, which is spelling Carson’s name as “Marc Carson,” contrary to the Daily News’ spelling, reports:

Carson was pronounced dead on arrival at Beth Israel Hospital.
Around 4 a.m., a police officer, responding to a radio alert of the shooting, came across the alleged gunman and apprehended him. The suspect turned over a silver Taurus .38-caliber six-shot revolver, according to police.

Police later identified the suspect as Elliot Morales, 33. Police said the suspect had forged identification and they used facial recognition technology to determine his true identity.

Morales faces a charge of second-degree murder as a hate crime, authorities said.
The identities of the suspect’s two companions — at least one of whom [Police Commissioner Ray] Kelly said left the suspect before the shooting — are still not known.

Kelly said that the killing appeared to be “a hate crime, a bias crime.” There were no words that would aggravate the situation, and the victim did not know the perpetrator, he said.

According to Kelly, there have been 22 bias-motivated events this year. That’s up “significantly” from 13 this time last year.

Joe Jervis, who published the above vigil graphic and additional news about Mark Carson’s murder, adds:

“Gather at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Eight Street near the Gray’s Papaya restaurant. The location is one block from the Ninth Street PATH station and two blocks from the Christopher Street 1 train station.”

Note: As this is a developing story details may still be in flux, as is evidenced by the different spellings of the victim’s name. We urge caution if readers believe they may personally know anyone involved. Additionally, reports state the police are still searching for two accomplices, and again we urge caution.
