Mormon Leaders Ask Students If They ‘Struggle With Same-Sex Attraction’ – ‘Homosexual’ Or ‘Bisexual’ Not An Option

A confidential survey distributed to some Brigham Young University students reveals the depths of ignorance the Mormon Church’s top leadership has about homosexuality. Students were told the survey was created to screen students for a focus group designed to better understand Millennial’s attitudes about “same-sex attraction,” yet it makes clear that “gay” is not an option — literally.

“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is conducting a focus group to better understand your views on marriage and same-sex attraction,” the short survey, which was exclusively obtained by The New Civil Rights Movement, reads. An email requesting students’ participation appeared to have been sent by Michael Colemere, Managing Director, Communication Services, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Brigham Young University, which has a student population of about 34,000, is wholly owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church).

The online survey asks basic questions, and also requests respondents rate on a scale of 1-5 if they are “not intimidated by people [they are] unfamiliar with,” if they “enjoy participating in new situations,” are “open to new ideas and experiences,” are “comfortable expressing [their] opinion to others,” and if they “often set the trends in [their] social circle.”

The survey also asks the students to rate their “stance on social and moral issues” on a 1-5 scale, from “Traditional / conservative” to “Progressive / liberal.”

All relatively basic questions.

But the survey also asks students to answer the question, “What is your sexual orientation?”

There are only three options and students must choose one:

I am heterosexual, but I struggle with same-sex attraction.

I am heterosexual and do not struggle with same-sex attraction.

Other, please specify:

Despite the LDS Church creating a website called “Mormon and Gay,” seemingly, in the minds of the Mormon Church’s top leadership, either someone is heterosexual, or they are heterosexual and “struggle” with a problem. Actually being gay, lesbian, bisexual, or any other orientation is not within the realm of possibility — as if the entire concept of homosexuality just does not exist.

A link to the survey was sent via email and included the request to complete the survey “to help the Quorum of the Twelve better understand what YSA members believe about same sex attraction.” The Quorum of the Twelve is part of the governing body of the Mormon, or Latter Day Saint church.

The controlling top Nazi Mormon Church leaders still categorizing gay/homosexual/bisexual people as just weird, sick, and/or immoral fringe "Others" in the same category as pig-fuckers and pedophiles.

Please post a few more questions from the survey.
After Regnerus, everyone is interested in surveys that attempt to study, you know, as they say, "heterosexuals with same sex attractions" SMH

You should post the link to the survey so we can all fill it out.

What a load of question-begging cr@p!

Minds will explode when they face up to the existence of more than one gender, too. Not everyone falls squarely into the binary-gender categories. There are genderfluid, intergender, transgender…__Not everyone who is not heterosexual is gay, either. "Gay" is not a defacto catchall term for homosexual: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual, Queer, Intersexual, Asexual, Pansexual (LGBTQIAP)__The world is evolving, folks, and there is more beneath the heavens than the sun and the moon.__From a proud mother & ally

It's not ignorance — it's thought control: If you don't name it, it doesn't exist.

Frankly, who cares? Why are we wasting time and outrage on "exposing" the bigotry of hate groups like the Mormons and the Catholic Church? They've made zero secret of their hatred of gays. What could possibly be gained by trying to shame them into changing their ways? For those gay people and their allies who need some sort of religion in their lives, there are plenty of accepting faith groups who would be delighted to welcome you into the fold. Let the Mormons and the Catholics and the rest of their ilk drown in their own bile.

I really think this is just a BYU thing and not so much the LDS Church (even though, I know, they are pretty much the same but bear in mind that different people do run the two institutions even though it is operated by the same church.)

I personally think BYU's ignorance is baffling. They can say that the world is their campus (one of the school's motto) when it's clearly their OWN world that they created for themselves is their campus. I just hope that people won't connect the school with the church because the church has more sympathetic and tolerant people (even though one of the church leaders in the last general conference of the church said that being tolerant is bad) than the school.

No, this is standard Mormon ideology. And fundamentalist Christian ideology in general for that matter.
They dismissively call it "same-sex attraction" to emphasize that it's not actually a sexual orientation, but a behavior that people can be cure from, or something that they can suppress. Gay Mormons are either expected to pretend to be straight and marry someone of the opposite sex or be celibate.

And BYU *is* the church. All top Mormon leaders are from there.

My niece, a Mormon, goes to a different university and also got the survey. I find it frightening because kids, thinking they might get a chance to express their opinion to the church leaders are actually being made to "out" themselves to the powers that be. How very convenient for the Mormon leaders to have a list of all young people and their sexual orientation no matter how the officials have couched the wording. This may not seem like a big deal to people who aren't Mormon, but it is a huge deal to Mormon kids and their future…if they don't want to be thrown from their religion, their families and the community or be made targets of those who would cure them of their ways.. Easy for people on the outside to ask why those kids would want to be Mormon anyway, but it is a very big deal to walk away from everything one has ever known including your family and all things eternal that have been taught since you were a baby. I believe most of those students will eventually make the transition away from the Mormon Church, but it should be at their own time and pace, not through a sneaky survey.

If I were gay and got that survey, you better believe I would mark down "Straight"
It was so creepy, "You will be contacted…"

They are a cult who believe that Jesus Christ came to America and that they get their own planet! It's one step away from Scientology. Who gives a flying F— what they think?

susanbjourney April 26, 2014 at 3:33 pm

Just to be clear, "transgender" is not a sexual orientation.

michaelrogers404 April 27, 2014 at 2:51 pm

What they meant was:
Are you:
a) Heterosexual
b) I'm in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir – I am so, so gay
c) I have blonde hair/blue eyes and I look hot in those black dress up duds — I am kinda gay
d) I have blonde hair AND a member of the Choir.. I am sooooooo gay.
e) When I give head to my preacher, he tells me it's the nectar of life, I am totally not gay (unless I want it then I am gay alright, super gay)

Hey, LDS Church! The APA has eliminated homosexuality as a mental disorder back in 1973. Get on the right side of history for once!

standingup55 May 2, 2014 at 2:21 pm

This survey is for BYU students. to clarify for the ignorant readers of this bias article, that means all the students signed an honer code to be admitted. everyone who attends signed their name to this code that says they are in line with the churches beliefs, so the church can word this however they please. its not for the world. your accusations are completely off base, ignorant, and distasteful. the church is not hateful, or spiteful and recognize homosexuality is a real thing. however the teachings are that if you practice it, your in the wrong. and a large number of pissed off people protesting does not make something wrong turn right. the church wont change its views no matter how many people oppose it. it knows better than to question higher authority.
