Post image for Mitt Romney Says He Got Booed Because Black People Just Want Free Stuff

Yesterday, Mitt Romney spoke to the NAACP and got booed for nearly 20 seconds when he promised the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization he will repeal Obamacare. Last night, at a fundraiser in Montana, Romney told reporters that the reason he got booed is because black people just want free stuff. If Romney went to the NAACP to tally a few more votes, he was wasting his time.

When I mentioned I am going to get rid of Obamacare they weren’t happy… That’s ok, I want people to know what I stand for and if I don’t stand for what they want, go vote for someone else, that’s just fine. But I hope people understand this, your friends who like Obamacare, you remind them of this, if they want more free stuff from government tell them to go vote for the other. But don’t forget nothing is really free.

Tommy Christopher at Mediaite wrote, “The quote is so tone-deaf, and such a naked appeal to the ‘welfare queen’ brand of racial and class resentment, that it’s almost hard to believe it’s real.”

But of course, Romney didn’t go visit the members of the NAACP thinking he was going to get votes. Romney went to the NAACP so he could say he went to the NAACP, just like his father had. Romney went to the NAACP, but he never stopped speaking to his base. Which would be fine except he was being thoroughly duplicitous.

Romney, after getting booed at the NAACP said “we expected it.”

Romney’s base hates the NAACP. Heck, Rush Limbaugh calls them the National Association For The Advancement Of Liberal Colored People. Michelle Malkin calls them the National Association For The Advancement Of Coddled People.

Romney’s appearance at the NAACP was so he could say he went in good faith and got booed, strengthening his base.

Duplicitous, and disgusting.

Don't be fooled, this was no error, it was designed to appeal to conservative rich white voters…"he went in the lions den". NAAPC was used to promote an agenda that is completely opposite to their mission!

eroissyfr July 12, 2012 at 10:33 am

either way, his response does have the ring of truth to it. Probably why it stung the NAACP so bad.

Proud_Lib_Mom July 12, 2012 at 2:46 pm

No it does not….FACT: DJFS DATA; the percentage by race who receives government assistance: 49% WHITE; 26% BLACK; 20% LATINO/HISPANIC; 8% OTHER….Know your facts before you start agreeing…And data shows that Whites are no longer the majority race in this country too…..Wow, the racism in this country is like the wide spread tax evasion of the rich White fat cats!

wompcity July 12, 2012 at 5:12 pm

well considering "white" or "European American" still make up 73.4% of this country in terms of racial demographics your argument is invalidated. If anything the statistics show that minorities are receiving a larger chunk of federal aid than they represent in total population… please check your facts before posting
Oh and the "tax evasion" you are talking about.. the top 1% of earners pay roughly 37% of all taxes. The top 10% pays 70% so I think they are carrying their weight… just saying.

Let me break this down for the ignorant racists:

A) Romney said that NAACP, and by association nearly all blacks are a bunch of freeloaders (meaning they're all on welfare). This is factually incorrect and racist. The vast majority of blacks are not on welfare.

B) Proud Lib Mom never stated that whites are more likely to be on welfare than blacks or Hispanics. She simply stated that more whites are on welfare than those of other races. Despite what the Republican leadership implies, welfare isn't just a bunch of lazy black people sucking on the government teet.

C) Wompcity uses a 73.4% as "white," but fails to mention that that 73.4% INCLUDES HISPANICS AS WHITES.

D) Wompcity just outright lies about taxes. The link provided only refers to "federal income tax," which is by no means "ALL TAXES," as wompcity claims. It does not include payroll taxes, state income taxes, local income taxes, property tax, sales tax, gas tax, or any of the other taxes paid by Americans. For those in the bottom 90%, these taxes make up the majority of their tax bill. I personally pay $0 in federal income taxes, but I pay $3,000 a year in property taxes, $2,000 in state and local taxes, $1,500 in payroll taxes, and hundreds more in the other types of taxes. But according to wompcity's data, none of those taxes count, and I'm merely a freeloader that pays no taxes.

E) Even if wompcity had not lied and instead said "federal income tax," it still would have been disingenuous and misleading. Although the top earners in America pay the majority of federal income taxes, they also make the vast majority of income, and control the vast majority of wealth. The effective federal tax rate paid by the top 1% has been lower over the past 3 years than it has been in the past 85 years, while their share of the overall national income is at an 85 year high.
If all the forms of taxes I listed were included, their effective tax rate would actually be lower than the vast majority of people in the middle class.

To make the leap that an opinion about a group (NAACP in this case) and their tactics by definition is an opinion of an entire race is incorrect.

I don't like the Republican party. That doesn't mean I feel that way about individuals who identify themselves as Republican. My like or dislike of the individual is based on the individual. If that person is a douche I don't care what his political inclination is.

Same with the NAACP..I find it unfortunate though that an entire ethnic group allows it's 'leaders' (NAACP, Jesse Jackson etc) to speak for them when clearly they all don't believe in it. They aren't slaves to their leaders, I would hope.

You made the leap to the association in your point A, therefore your hysteria makes the rest of your points suspect.

The NAACP continues to advocate for people of color of all economic levels, against institutionalized anti-minority discrimination in the United States. Its advocacy for people who do not yet enjoy "liberty and justice for all" includes its advocacy for LGBT equality. Given that Republican US Senators voted against equal pay for equal work for women, nobody need point at recipients of public assistance to say that the NAACP only exists to get "free stuff" for people. It is fighting hard to get women of color, and all women, equal pay for equal work.

Mitt Romney doesn't worry about the problems of poor people … because there is a "safety net" … which he wants to defund … because people (including single, full-time moms) who depend upon financial assistance such as food stamps lack dignity … because you must be completely self-sufficient to have self-worth … unless you inherited vast wealth … in which case you are inherently highly dignified … because you are a person of power and authority … who gets to enjoy the sheer pleasure of firing people … which Mitt did countless times while running Bain Capital, creating huge profits … for himself and his fellow investors … at the expense of fired workers … who, as a result, often joined the growing ranks of poor people in America … which Mitt doesn't worry about.

Please learn to use "." (periods) between sentences instead of . . . . . to make a ridiculously long run on sentence that is exhausting to read in one breath. Thanks!

eroissyfr July 12, 2012 at 2:18 pm

If you still think the NAACP is such a great bastion of civil rights then read this article. You certainly can't say it is racist..Check out the author.

Proud_Lib_Mom July 12, 2012 at 2:50 pm

And your point? From a person with the power of a typewrither (sorry, computer) with a job as a reporter writing an OPINION piece….okay….and…..

eroissyfr July 12, 2012 at 3:48 pm

My point is stop following what your party says is the truth and do some fact digging of your own. It isn't difficult. People who follow the cult of liberalism are just as bad as those that follow the cult of conservativeism. Think for yourself.

Just because the NAACP press says it is so, doesn't make it true. There will be a kernel of truth but the rest is just rhetoric. (which goes back to your point about the person with a computer doesn't it?) There is no denying that the NAACP has strayed far from it's roots and culture of non partisanship. It is now just another political machine.

Same as the Limbaughs of the world. There is a nugget of truth in there but they lose their credibility by the crazy that drops from their mouths. It is all about ratings and media exposure.

Try removing your veil and judge the thing on it's actual merits, not what the media has to say about it. And this site IS just another media outlet with it's own slant on things.

Do you not realize that saying someone "can't be racist" because they're black is in itself a racist statement?

It absolutely amazes me that people make this blatantly unapologetic racist statements. There is no gender, race, or religion that provides immunity from discrimination for its members. Some women discriminate against men, and some discriminate against other women. Some blacks discriminate against whites, some against Hispanics, and others actually discriminate against other blacks. Do you realize that there were black slave owners, and American Indian slave owners?

Please educate yourself on discrimination.

eroissyfr July 13, 2012 at 12:05 pm

I am well educated on discrimination. You might do well to likewise educate yourself. I also don't feel that every single word in the english language is fraught with racist overtones. A word is only racist is you allow it to be. Stop being so sensitive.

dumpiness July 12, 2012 at 5:41 pm

Whoever came up with this title should be ashamed of themselves. You make it sound as if Romney said something that he did not say. This is extremely scummy. I hope the person who came up with that title reads this because you are trash. You are no better than Fox News and you are certainly on the same tier as Rush!

You should be ashamed of yourself sir. Congrats, you are now no better than Rush!

eroissyfr July 13, 2012 at 12:07 pm

Goes back to my point that people need to actually educate themselves with a bit of research on a subject instead of just assuming the headlines and article are the be all and end all. This site is just as slanted in it's reporting as any other.

I use sites like this as a starting point on a subject. Not the be all and end all.

dez805 July 18, 2012 at 10:55 pm

Oh it was very racist. He directly implied that black people want free stuff. Romney has no intention of helping the black community in any way. We are just a political ploy to get more right leaning moderates. I know now with certainty that President Obama will get my vote and everyone else I know.

maza_g July 13, 2012 at 4:38 am

You need to further educate yourself, Blacks owned other blacks because they were born free or were either granted their papers. Slaves that fit between a certain age bracket could not earn their freedom because of certain laws by certain states. Family members had to buy their family members (sometimes the same slaveowners whose plantations they'd been born on if they weren't sold) from white folks. Ownership over other blacks was in their own right a way to grant their family and friends freedom for freed blacks who had the money to do it. So I again further urge you to educate YOURSELF on fact before you preach discrimination.

As far as the Romney situation is concerned, this does not surprise me a bit. Neither do I care what a self righteous white man thinks he's accomplishing by peddling the same old "black people are less then everyone else because they want handouts" bull from his cart of crap. He's doing nothing that I haven't seen before. Same ish different year. The tyrants through the majority of scriptures had the same complex.

ORAXX July 13, 2012 at 8:52 am

Romney strikes me as someone who always says what he thinks he is expected to say. President Romney will make this country long for the good old days of the Bush administration.

Orange112345 July 14, 2012 at 2:22 am

Honestly forget the racist comments that Romney subjected to a national audience. What we have to ask ourselfs is not who is using or who is on welfare. We have to ask ourselfs do we want this guy to represent our nation as a whole. If this guy truely is racist, I for one do not want him as an American president. The president of the United States has to represent the morale structure and values of the people. He has to reflect freedom and liberty for all.
