Mike Huckabee is threatening the GOP, warning them that if they support same-sex marriage, evangelicals will form a third party. Former Family Research Council president Gary Bauer and current FRC president Tony Perkins have recently both echoed those words.

When asked by the website Newsmax “if he sees the GOP ever pivoting and backing gay marriage,” Huckabee admitted they might.

“And if they do, they’re going to lose a large part of their base because evangelicals will take a walk,” Newsmax reports:

“And it’s not because there’s an anti-homosexual mood, and nobody’s homophobic that I know of, but many of us, and I consider myself included, base our standards not on the latest Washington Post poll, but on an objective standard, not a subjective standard.

“I have great sympathy and extraordinary admiration for Sen. Portman. I consider him a friend and I value his work in the Senate and think he’s a great person. The mistake is that we sometimes base our public policy decisions on how we feel, how we think, maybe even some personal experiences, and we don’t regard a lot of these issues from the standpoint of an objective standard.

“Let me explain what I mean by that. If we have subjective standards, that means that we’re willing to move our standards based on the prevailing whims of culture. Politicians have an obligation to be thermostats, not just thermometers. They’re not simply to reflect the temperature of the room, or the culture, as it were. They’re to set the standards for law, for what’s right, for what’s wrong, understanding that not everybody’s going to agree with it.

“On this issue, I recognize the culture is moving away from the traditional standard, but it’s almost like saying, well, we have a basketball team and nobody on the team can hit the goal that’s 10 feet off the floor so we’re going to lower the goal down to six feet and that way everybody can slam dunk the ball.

“So the question is, have you have improved your basketball game? Or have you actually just changed the standard so it looks like you’re doing better? And that’s my concern.”

Today, former Family Research Council president and Republican presidential candidate Gary Bauer threatened to start a third party over same-sex marriage.

Well, members of the Third Reich thought dumping people into ovens or cramming them in gas chambers were based on 'objective' standards. It would take little for Huckabee and company to reinvigorate prevailing 'objective' scientific 'eugenic' standards practiced during the early 20th century in much of America.

This is one of the many reasons I am armed. Remember Hitler? Think it can't happen again? Not without a fight. This is the same man that wants to quarantine HIV+ folks remember.

I thought that in a representative-type government, a politician IS expected to implement the will of the people as far as they are able. Not impose what he or she believes to be objective truth regardless of what the public thinks. The US is not a stagnant theocracy…yet.

Yes, PLEASE. Make it that much easier for us to marginalize you.

"Dear Santa,

I promise I'll never ask for anything else… "

DUG853 March 26, 2013 at 10:11 pm

Good idea-!

Let's call it the "Irrational Authoritarian Party"-!

Jjcnsgte March 26, 2013 at 11:56 pm

Let them form a third party. Then where is the seperation of church and state? Also if so many more people are agreeing with same sex marriage, then who's going to follow and vote for them? Not many. They will get no where by hey know it and that's why they haven't done it yet,

Moralist99 March 26, 2013 at 11:59 pm

Let's see. If "improving the basketball game" instead of moving the goal means continuing to treat gay people like they were criminal sexual deviants instead of people who, for a host of reasons explainable by brain science and evolution, are clearly, without a doubt, born that way, then how is that a better way to treat a part of our population, as citizens in a free country? Huckaby is just excusing a standard of cruelty and meanness. That's not very Christian, fellas…

So Gomer Shuckabee is joining Tony (the PAC man, not the actor) Perkins in forming a splinter party of people who think the earth is 6,000 years old and that Adam walked the earth with dinosaurs. Give us a break. Evangelicalism is doomed. Once their 10th century ideas are exposed for the fraud that they are, people will abandon their ranks like rats from a sinking ship. Gomer has delusions of grandeur, and he is deluded about the Buy Bull as well. The only way he got to be governor of Arkansas is by taking advantage of Big Money's contempt for Bill Clinton. He got his pulpit to preach because Fox knew what Seneca did, that religion is a handy tool in the hands of rulers [politicians]. He ought to go back to Mayberry and preach in the dumbass churches there.

Here, wait… Let me get the door for you so it doesn't hit you in the backside on the way out! Don't call us, we'll call you…

I don't want to give the GOP any ideas, but they should first examine the two-term presidency of "Ike" Eisenhower and emulate him. Secondly, take Barry Goldwater's advice and go for gay rights and avoid the religious fringe.

stevecsimmons March 27, 2013 at 1:33 am

Go, Mike! And if I'm not perfectly clear on that, let me rephrase it slightly: Leave, Mike! Sucking the fringies out into a third party is the best possible outcome for the Republicans and the Nation. The Republican party will exhale with palpable relief and welcome back the moderates, and the new fringe party will lose lose all the elections and collapse in an orgy of backbiting and blamecasting. So I say again:

Go, Mike!

Great, the grand mutual slaughter of the Right begins, let 'em kill each other!

nutrdoc55 March 27, 2013 at 9:02 am

If this suppsed man of god actually ever read the documents and papers written by the founding fathers of this nation he would realize we were not founded as a judao christian nation. They alreayd had enough of church and state being mixed together. Our first international treaty even states it. What he is support ing is a form of discrimination and supposelty backed by some supposed holy book. If your going to use that as your standard then he needs to follow the whole thing. you cant pick and choose what you wish to follow. Aslo since the state gives the minsitters the power to perform marriages by giveing them licences doesnt hat mean that marriage is a state instution not a regilious one? so lets make marriage a civil instution . if you want a church wedding fine but it wont be legal unless you have a civil marriage ffirst.

awain69 March 27, 2013 at 12:24 pm

In a representative democracy, politicians are supposed to reflect the will of the people, not their own wills. Mr. Huckabee, with all due respect, you know nothing about American civics, you are out of touch, and your theology is cruel and exclusionary. Jesus never said a word about gay people. Not one word. And go ahead and form a third party, please. You are no longer a majority. Evangelicals are no longer a majority. Splinter the party in yet another piece because we are sick of your racism, your exclusionary practices based on some sick idea of God. No one will vote for you except your own base, and if they're voting for you, that means they're leaving the rest of America alone. So far, I don't see anything but good that could come out of evangelicals leaving the Republican party. Don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.

After yesterday's posting we received an email asking to comment on the actual issue of gay marriage, and not solely our belief on marriage itself. We invite you to read and share.
Thank you,Simone and Crystal

The Biblical Definition of marriage is…

- An arranged marriage—Genesis 24:1-4 (and many other passages)

- A levirate marriage (If a man died leaving no male heir, his brother was required to marry his widow and produce children)—Deuteronomy 25:5-10

- A polygamous marriage—1 Kings 11:3 (and many, many other passages)

- Not inter-racial—Deuteronomy 7:14; 1 Corinthians 7:39; 2 Corinthians 6:14

- Filled with sexual prohibitions—no intercourse during menstruation (The woman is unclean. Yet another degradation of women.) —The woman cannot withhold sex from her husband; she has to fulfill his desire for sex when he wants it. (And another example of the Bible’s misogyny)

- Not allowed to be dissolved, i.e. NO DIVORCE—Matthew 5:31-32; Mark 10:2-12; Luke 16:18

- Except when the man wanted to because his wife had become ‘displeasing’ to him—Deuteronomy 24:1-4

- Between a rapist and his victim—Deuteronomy 22:28-29

- An arranged marriage by a slave owner for his slaves—Genesis 24:4

- Can be between brother and sister—How else do you explain where Cain’s wife came from!

- Intended to produce children—Without children a woman was:
Shamed—a barren woman was looked upon as cursed by God
Unable to be saved—1 Timothy 2:15

Are these the kinds of marriages you're talking about Mr. Huckabee?

baghdadroz March 27, 2013 at 9:56 pm

@k13collins, you forgot between half-siblilngs, Sarah and Abraham.

olorinstaff March 27, 2013 at 9:20 pm

Great! A new political party based on religious beliefs. I know, we can call it the Taliban!

radsenior March 27, 2013 at 11:12 pm

Mike Huckabee thinks his doesn't stink, and has appointed himself as leader of the now defunct evangelicals. Evangelicals is one of the multi-footed concoction that made up portions of the once proud Republican party. This same grouping backed Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, John Cornyn and for sure those who advocated re-defining rape: Todd Akin, Roger Rivard, Rick Berg, Richard Mourdock, John Koster and even Paul Ryan. Wake up America! The 2014 Mid-term is a-coming! Get registered and V.O.T.E.(Vote Out The Encumberances)

kilifiman March 28, 2013 at 12:42 pm

Please, please please do it. Do it now before another non-issue crops up and distracts you.

wehadrons March 30, 2013 at 6:15 am

Great idea Mike! Your new party can use a dinosaur as it's mascot.

maryposie April 17, 2013 at 10:29 am

Wow – there really is hope. There are sane, broad-minded, realistic humans in the U.S. More than that — some of them are members of the Republican Party. Spread the word. Your neighbours to the north will breathe a sign of relief!
