The Log Cabin Republicans today placed a full-page ad challenging the House GOP’s funding to defend DOMA in court. The ad, which runs in The Hill, a right-leaning publication covering D.C. politics, reads:
The Republican Party:
Right on Taxes.
Right on Spending.
Right on Health Care.
Right Side of History?
and depicts a female same-sex couple getting married.
“Log Cabin Republicans applauds those Republican Members of Congress who have signed on to the Respect for Marriage Act and urges other Republicans to follow their lead,” the ad reads. “To be the party of limited government, individual liberty, and fiscal responsibility, the Republican Party must stop standing in the way of caring adults building a family and a life together. A full 53 percent of Americans now support the freedom to marry. It’s time for Republicans to stop spending taxpayer money defending DOMA and start defending the right of ALL Americans to pursue happiness with the person they love.”
Via a press release, Gregory T. Angelo, new Interim Executive Director of the Log Cabin Republicans, said:
When Republicans focus on core issues of fiscal responsibility, low taxes, and jobs, we win elections. When Republicans do the right thing and support the freedom to marry for all Americans, we win new allies. Our new ad highlights this fact and urges the GOP to do what’s right for America and for our future as a party.
Speaker John Boehner has authorized at least $2 million to defend DOMA, the Defense of Marriage Act of 1996 that bans the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages, in court. To date, Boehner’s hand-picked outside attorney has lost every case, and dozens of federal judges have called DOMA unconstitutional.
