In a hilarious jab at North Carolina’s House Bill 2, Comedy Central’s The Daily Show set up shop in a barbecue food truck at two locations in Raleigh recently.Â
In addition to restricting restroom access for transgender people, HB2 nullified local ordinances prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in public accommodations. Â
“I wanted to show North Carolinians what HB2 would look like in action, so I rented a food truck … and set out to refuse service to people by telling them they’re gay,†correspondent Roy Wood Jr. says at the beginning of the segment. “HB2 says I can do this Jim Crow-level shit, and nobody can stop me.â€
“Wow, that is so weird, it’s as if people don’t like arbitrary discrimination,” Wood says.Â
Correspondent Jordan Klepper, who manned the food truck with Wood, tells one potential customer: “Your gay taste buds aren’t even calibrated to enjoy straight mac and cheese. They’re more cultivated to enjoy things like cilantro and penis.”Â
Wood then explains to the customer that Klepper has good gaydar because “the Bible.” A man accompanying the customer turns out to be a pastor.Â
“Even if he were gay, I mean, still you should serve him,” the pastor says. Â
“It’s fun here, you can say whatever the fuck you want,” Wood tells Klepper near the end of the segment. “Is this what being white is like? You just tell people no for no reason?”
The Daily Show explained the stunt to customers and bought their meals after the filming. Â
“These people already have to live in North Carolina,†Wood says. “That’s stressful enough.â€
