Cashing in on Saturday’s New York Times report indicating Donald Trump may have avoided paying federal income tax for nearly two decades, the Clinton campaign unveiled “Trump’s ‘Smart’ Tax Calculator” on Sunday.Â
“We’ve developed a formula to calculate how much you would pay in taxes if you paid the same as Donald Trump,” the calculator states.Â
Trump, of course, said during Monday’s debate that not paying federal income taxes would make him “smart.” In response to the NYT report, Rudy Giuliani and other surrogates said declaring a $916 million loss to avoid paying taxes makes Trump “a genius.”Â
Regardless of what amount you enter in Clinton’s calculator — I put in $100 million — it determines that, “If you were Donald Trump, you would have paid $0.00* in federal income taxes”:
*Donald Trump says it’s because he’s smart. The New York Times says it’s because he lost almost a billion dollars. Either way, Donald Trump may have avoided paying federal income taxes for 18 years after losing $916 million in 1995. And Trump really did pay zero, or nearly zero, in federal income taxes in 1978, 1979, 1984, 1991, and 1993. Until we see evidence otherwise, we’ll assume it’s still zero.”Â

Moments after launching the calculator, Clinton called out Trump over a tweet he made in 2012:Â

Also attacking Trump on Sunday in response to the NYT exposé was Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid, who issued a statement saying the GOP nominee won’t release his recent tax returns because they’d expose him as “a spoiled, rich brat.”Â
