HBO premiered its new movie The Case Against 8 at the Sundance Film Festival, in Park City, Utah ,this weekend to rave reviews. To celebrate, they threw wedding party, inviting the same-sex couples who married in Utah during the state’s precious “rainbow hours” where such marriages were legal.

Several of the newlyweds/no longer weds were seen rubbing elbows with the stars of the film, and celebrities like Rob Reiner, who was a stalwart marriage equality supporter during the Prop 8 battle. The real-life couples who sued to overturn Prop 8 in California were also there to celebrate both the HBO documentary about their lives, and the weddings of the Utah couples who face the same challenge they overcame: being allowed to marry, and then having that marriage taken away.

HBO had reason to celebrate. The Case Against 8, a look at the five year fight to overturn Prop 8 by filmmakers Ryan White and Ben Cotner, was a Sundance hit, evoking tears and a lengthy standing ovation. Theodore Olson and David Boies, the lawyers who fought the real-life battle depicted by the movie stayed to answer questions after the screening. Olson told the crowd:

“The goal is to have marriage equality in all 50 states in five years.”

The Case Against 8 will air on HBO in June. There is no word yet on when the Utah marriages will resume.
