A Republican Congressman is pushing a bill that would force the President to balance the budget or be impeached. The bill, from Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL), reads, “The President may not order any increase in taxes or other revenue measures to enforce the Amendment,” adding, “A President’s failure to prevent a prohibited fiscal year deficit is an impeachable offense.”
The bill, if passed and the President signed it into law (as if) would not take full effect for five years, but there’s a get-out-of-jail-free card: all a President who won’t or can’t balance a budget do is take the country to war to allow Congress to take him off the hook.
In other words, perpetual war.
By the way, Rep. Brooks in 2011 was forced to allow his comments to be striccken from the congressional record after calling his fellow Congressmen “socialists.”
“Folks, we are here today forcing this issue because America is at risk. We are at risk of insolvency and bankruptcy because the socialist members of this body choose to spend money that we do not have.”
