“I’m a Republican — many of you I’m sure are Democrats — I’m a Republican. Let me say to my party: if you bail out on this issue, I will leave the party and I will take as many people with me as I possibly can.”
First, it’s amusing that he thinks “many” in the crowd were Democrats. They were not.
Second, the GOP would be thrilled for Gary Bauer to leave the party.
For those unfamiliar with the former Assistant Director of Opposition Research at the Republican National Committee, former director of government relations for the Direct Mail Marketing Association, Ronald Reagan’s former Deputy Under Secretary for Planning and Budget in the Department of Education, former Chairman of President Reagan’s Special Working Group on the Family, Gary Bauer was — here it comes — former president of the Family Research Council.
Bauer today is the founder of the “pro-family, pro-life and pro-free enterprise” Campaign for Working Families (CWF), president of American Values, and has strong tied to supposed pro-Israel groups.
Bauer tried to run for president in 1999. He lost.
GLAAD notes that Bauer was “behind one of the most mocked ads of the 2012 election cycle, claiming President Obama was going to force gay marriage on everyone.”
