WATCH: Sean Spicer Chuckles When Asked if Any Women in White House Took Off Work to Support Women’s Strike
‘You Know, It’s a Free Country’
Today is International Women’s Day and many women and allies are observing the day by participating in what’s being called a general strike known as A Day Without Women. When asked if any women working in the White House had taken the day off to support the movement, Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s first response was to chuckle.
After composing himself he said he was not aware of anyone who took the day off to participate, and said that “Everyone that I’m aware of is working really hard to advance the President’s agenda.”
He added, “We want to recognize the contributions that women make to our businesses to our families to our economy, to our society, and, you know, it’s a free country.”
“People have the right to express themselves, but I think that we should on a daily basis not just one day a year but 365 days a year appreciate the contributions that women make in all of those categories.”

Aside from his restrained laughter, Spicer’s comment was akin to telling Black Lives Matter protestors that “all lives matter.”
Sure, they do, but there’s a very good reason we need to say “Black Lives Matter,” and there’s a very good reason we need to take a day to focus on women, and it’s because of people like Donald Trump and responses like Sean Spicer’s.
