WATCH LIVE: FBI Director Comey Testifies Before Intelligence Committee on Trump, Wiretapping – and Russia?
Will Comey Reveal Trump Scandal?
At 10 AM EDT FBI Director James Comey will testify before the House Intelligence Committee on Donald Trump, Russia, and the president’s claim that his predecessor, President Barack Obama, wiretapped him.
Director Comey, who has proven to like the spotlight, is expected to debunk President Donald Trump’s lie that President Obama wiretapped him. That would prove to be a huge black eye for a president whose approval ratings have now hit historic lows.
What Americans are also hoping to hear, but likely will not to any great extent, is just how far Russia’s claws have dug into the United States, and into the Trump campaign and possibly the Trump administration. It’s unlike there will be much revealed there, but Comey may dangle a few tidbits.
The New York Times notes that the FBI “has not publicly acknowledged the existence of the investigation into the connections between Mr. Trump’s associates and Russia. Typically, F.B.I. officials do not discuss developing investigations. But at times when the press has reported about an investigation at length, the officials will acknowledge the existence of an inquiry. The panel would like to examine the evidence that the bureau has obtained, but Mr. Comey may tell lawmakers that they cannot see it until his investigation is over.”
And this, which is every reason to watch:
“If Mr. Comey acknowledges the investigation, it could balloon into a scandal for the still-young Trump administration.”
