Trump Forgets He Is President of the US, Hails Candidate He Says Will Save ‘Our Great’ Confederate Statutes and Heritage
Confederate Soldiers Waged War Against the United States
What does it say when the President of the United States praises traitors who literally took up arms to wage civil war against the United States?
President Donald Trump has been repeatedly tweeting his support for Republican Ed Gillespie, who is running to be the next governor of Virginia and running a very ugly down dirty race. Gillespie’s Democratic opponent is Ralph Northam, who Real Clear Politics puts at an average of 3.9 points over Gillespie.
Thursday, President Trump lauded Gillespie, saying he may save “our great” Confederate statutes and heritage.Â
Ed Gillespie will turn the really bad Virginia economy #’s around, and fast. Strong on crime, he might even save our great statues/heritage!

Northam quickly shot back:
I served 8 years in the Army, took care of sick kids, and am running to build a more inclusive Virginia. Don’t talk to me about showing up. https://t.co/jzDx9bS6mh

Trump’s tweet does little except remind Americans of his extremely offensive remarks blaming “both sides,” including people who were peacefully protesting Neo-Nazis and white supremacists – who he called “very fine people” – for the violence in Charlottesville.
To be clear, Trump is supporting racism and racial oppression, plain and simple.
In an ad released Wednesday, Gillespie narrows the entire election down to one issue: Confederate statutes. “I’m for keeping them up, and he’s for taking them down,” the GOP candidate says of his Democratic opponent.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports Virginia has over 200 Confederate monuments and public symbols. Citing a Southern Poverty Law Center study, the newspaper says there are “223 ‘publicly supported spaces’ in Virginia ‘dedicated to the Confederacy.'”
