Mistake or a Freudian Slip?: Internet Mocks Trump After Tweeter-in-Chief Twice Says America Will ‘Heel’
Third Time’s the Charm…
Another protest-filled Saturday, another opportunity for President Trump to expose his inner racist. This Saturday came with one additional embarrassment to America as the Tweeter-in-Chief misspelled the word “heal,” as “heel.”
On the first attempt Trump tweeted, “Our great country has been divided for decade, but it will come together again. Sometimes protest is needed in order to heel, and heel we will!”
The misspelled word “heel” and other errors are original to his tweet.
The second time, Trump tweeted: “Our country has been divided for decades. Sometimes you need to protest in order to heel, & we will heel, & be stronger than ever before!”
Still misspelled “heal” as “heel.”
First two tries he spelled it “heel” https://t.co/5J0F69OmgB

Tweeted, deleted, and tweeted again. Heel, America. pic.twitter.com/NcCqiMxHUb

After tweeting then deleting both, finally, third time was the charm:
Our great country has been divided for decades. Sometimes you need protest in order to heal, & we will heal, & be stronger than ever before!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 19, 2017
Getting past the spelling errors, it’s unclear, given his earlier tweet, which protestors he was offering support to. One hour earlier he clearly was pushing the Fox News bunk that the left is violent:
Looks like many anti-police agitators in Boston. Police are looking tough and smart! Thank you.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 19, 2017
In reality, Trump was agitating violence, which is reprehensible.
Meanwhile, on Twitter, many were only too happy to respond to the president’s mistakes.
Like the dictionary company Merriam-Webster:
🥠heal (to become healthy again)
😈 heel (a contemptible person)
🙋â€â™‚ï¸ he’ll (he will)— Merriam-Webster (@MerriamWebster) August 19, 2017
Famous author Stephen King:
In his latest tweet, Trump commands America to heel.
— Stephen King (@StephenKing) August 19, 2017
And NBC News’ Kelly O’Donnell:
Dogs heel. Feet/shoes have heels. Presidents can offer words that heal. https://t.co/6Uuecq8AFb
— Kelly O’Donnell (@KellyO) August 19, 2017
And others:
There ya go. https://t.co/KB4K1tF8fA

Aide: Sir, typo
Trump: Fixed it
Aide: No still there, “heel”
Trump: Yea, heel!
Aide: You mean “heal”
Trump: No I dont
Aide: Gimme your phone pic.twitter.com/uwzo8kzKKP— maura quint (@behindyourback) August 19, 2017
Moral apologist for white supremacists & KKK calls on country to “heel” since it has been divided for “decade.” What an eloquent statesman. pic.twitter.com/2p3c6n4lDi

Remember, HEEL is the location of the bone spurs you faked. HEAL is something different. Good talk.

This is a tweet from the president of the United States. What “decades” is he talking about? And, “heel.” Twice. Sigh. pic.twitter.com/vFOaHHjoqA

Nobody knew how hard it was to spell heal #heel
— Melissa Allen (@Westwind111) August 19, 2017
Some suggested maybe it wasn’t an error at all. “Heel” as a verb: “(of a dog) follow closely behind its owner.”
I actually don’t see this as a Trump spelling error of heal, but a dog whistle of the word ‘heel’, as in ‘bring them to heel’ pic.twitter.com/380ROSFBmh

“protest in order to heel & we will heel” now if that isn’t a Freudian slip to fear. #DonaldTrump https://t.co/W0eHMAQmoj
— Harry Leslie Smith (@Harryslaststand) August 19, 2017
He was probably subconsciously thinking about bringing all the minorities, women, and LGBT to heel. Freudian slip.

fascism is a heel stomping on your face forever

And some took the opportunity to be defiant and resist!
Boston will never heel. pic.twitter.com/3oBqDObcFg

1. Divided since inception
2. Heal, not heel
3. We’re protesting you pic.twitter.com/bEphcpyleu— Franklin Leonard (@franklinleonard) August 19, 2017
Boston will never be brought to #heel #blacklivesmatter #FightSupremacy pic.twitter.com/YFFtViPA5d

I will not HEEL to Trump. But my country will HEAL. https://t.co/KoBR6YgcZE
