Stupid Tweet Of The Day: US Sen. David Vitter
U.S. Senator David Vitter wants you to know just how much he hates immigrants.
Republican U.S. Senator David Vitter‘s name is all but synonymous with his 2007 D.C. Madam prostitution sex scandal. After a week of salacious news reports, Vitter dragged his dutiful wife in front of the cameras and begged for forgiveness.
Sen. Vitter is now running for Governor of Louisiana. His top issue? “Illegal immigration,” per his campaign website.
What better way to win an election for governor than to use your Senate office to introduce an anti-immigration bill?
When folks from other countries give birth in the US, their kids become American citizens. This should be illegal. http://t.co/ffjwe0QtD8

“It’s astounding that we’re allowing foreign citizens to exploit the loopholes of our immigration system in this manner, and Congress has the obligation to stop it,†Vitter says in a press release today. “This practice comes down to a fundamental misunderstanding of the 14th Amendment, and we can stop the massive problem with some simple clarification.â€
The 14th Amendment states that citizenship extends to “all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof.†The qualification of jurisdiction refers to the jurisdiction that a foreign government has with regards to its citizens.
Isn’t it funny how conservatives claim to love the Constitution (and the bible) except for the parts they don’t?
Perhaps Sen. Vitter should apply his same perspective to the Second Amendment.
The 14th Amendment, aside from granting U.S. citizenship to those born in the U.S., is also the basis of dozens upon dozens of federal court rulings supporting the right of same-sex couples to marry, and the right of a woman to choose to have an abortion.
Senator Vitter’s bill is by definition unconstitutional, and could be the start of a dramatic and drastic change to settled law integral to American culture today.
Some responses via Twitter:
.@DavidVitter wants to end Birthright Citizenship. That’s Republicanese for, “We love Americans, we’re just not crazy about the brown ones.”
