Republicans Support Trump’s Call To Ban Muslims, But Majority Of Americans Do Not
A new poll finds fascinating dynamics between Democrats and Republicans, and even among Republicans themselves.
Once again, Republicans are the outliers in American opinion and politics. A brand new just released NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds that a plurality of Republicans, 42 percent, support Donald Trump‘s call to ban Muslims from entering the United States, while 36 percent are opposed.
That same poll finds that overall, a firm majority – 57 percent – of Americans are opposed to the suggestion.
But among GOP primary voters, who count the most right now, there is an even split: 38 percent are opposed, 37 percent are in favor of the ban.
On the other side of the aisle, 75 percent of Democrats and even 55 percent of independents are opposed to the Republican frontrunner’s proposal.
NBC News finds that 41 percent of rural voters support Trump’s call for a ban, while just 13 percent of urban voters support it.
As far as the candidate himself is concerned, fully 40 percent of Republicans say Trump is “telling it like it is,” and don’t have a problem with his language or manner. Only 16 percent say they find Trump “insulting.”
Six out of ten Americans (59%) say they have a favorable opinion of Muslims overall, but only 43 percent of Republicans hold that opinion, while almost half, 48 percent, have an unfavorable opinion of Muslims.
75 percent of Democrats and 59 percent of independents hold a favorable opinion.
NCRM reported on a poll released yesterday by Bloomberg News which found 65 percent of likely Republican primary voters supported Trump’s ban on Muslims entering the U.S.
