After Trump Floats Raising Age Limit for AR-15s NRA Warns on ‘Constitutional Right to Self-Protection’
Candidate Trump Promised NRA ‘I Will Not Let You Down’Â
During the race to the White House the NRA endorsed Donald Trump in May of 2016. “I will not let you down,” Trump promised.
That promise may be about to be tested.
President Donald Trump has suggested the possibility of changing the legal minimum age of people allowed to purchase military style assault weapons, most commonly known as AR-15s. Trump is reportedly open to the idea of making it illegal for those under the age of 21 to purchase these weapons, which have been used in a large number of mass shootings.
After the president floated the idea, the NRA warned that raising the age to 21 is a non-starter.
“Legislative proposals that prevent law-abiding adults aged 18-20 years old from acquiring rifles and shotguns effectively prohibits them for purchasing any firearm, thus depriving them of their constitutional right to self-protection,” NRA Public Affairs Director Jennifer Baker said in a statement.
“Passing a law that makes it illegal for a 20-year-old to purchase a shotgun for hunting or adult single mother from purchasing the most effective self-defense rifle on the market punishes law-abiding citizens for the evil acts of criminals,†Baker added. “We need serious proposals to prevent violent criminals and the dangerously mentally ill from acquiring firearms.â€Â
The NRA has opposed every bill that restricts the sale of firearms, accessories like “bump stocks,” or bullets.
In February of 2017 President Trump promised once again, “we will protect our Second Amendment,” while telling supporters the heads of the NRA, Chris W. Cox snd Wayne LaPierre (image above) “love our country.”
