Most Republicans – But Not Most Americans – Support Trump’s Response to Charlottesville and White Supremacism
One in Four Republicans Think Trump’s Policies Are Encouraging Racial Unity
Two out of three Republicans support President Trump’s handling of the Charlottesville domestic terror attack as well as his placing blame “on both sides.” A new CBS News poll finds 67 percent of Republicans approve of his response, while the majority of Americans do not. Overall, 55 percent of Americans, including 82 percent of Democrats and 53 percent of independents disapprove of his performance on the issue.
Similarly, nearly seven out of ten Republicans (68%) support Trump finding blame “on many sides” while 55 percent say that is not accurate.
On race overall, few Republicans (15%) believe that Trump’s policies are sowing racial division. The poll did not specifically ask about his comments on race, just his policies.
One out of four Republicans, meanwhile think Trump’s policies are encouraging racial unity across the country, despite evidence to the contrary. The majority of Republicans (56%) say Trump’s policies have not had much effect on race.
Last week a Washington Post poll found almost seven out of 10 Republicans falsely believe millions of undocumented immigrants voted in the 2016 election.
That same poll found a majority of Republicans would support postponing the 2020 presidential election until the country can ensure only U.S. citizens are able to vote, if President Trump suggested it.Â
