More Trump Jobs Lies: Falsely Claims Sprint Hiring 5000 Because of ‘Hope’ Surrounding His Election
Jobs Were Announced in 2015
Donald Trump is claiming that because of the “hope” he’s created already across America, telecom giant Sprint will add 5000 jobs in the U.S.
“I was just called by the head people at Sprint, and they are going to be bringing 5,000 jobs back to the United States,†Trump told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on Wednesday. “They have taken them from other countries. They are bringing them back to the United States.â€
The only problem: Sprint announced those jobs back in April of 2015, well before Trump even announced his candidacy for president, and they were also announced again earlier this year as part of a larger plan, which again, had nothing to do with Trump.
Trump, asked whether Sprint jobs he hailed today had previously been announced: “because of me they’re doing 5,000 jobs in this country”

Politico’s Senior tech reporter noted the facts:
Sprint confirms to me what we suspected: the “5,000 jobs announced today are part of the 50,000 jobs that Masa previously announced”

And Huffington Post’s Senior Politics Editor noted what really happened:
so Trump re-purposed a jobs announcement and, naturally, a got a bunch of good headlines for it https://t.co/iN9DTAXhiv

Oliver Willis notes the mainstream media played stenographer to Trump’s lie, without bothering to fact-check.
Also, the jobs won’t even be filled until 2018:
Trump lied when he said he brought jobs back by talking to Sprint. My local news, @KCBSKCALDesk just repeated his lie on the 10pm news. pic.twitter.com/4LnguT2lIb

Trump pulled a similar stunt when he and Mike Pence arranged for Carrier to be granted a large tax break which did not prevent them from shipping 1100 jobs to Mexico, saving just 800.
