McCrory Blasts NCAA as ‘Tax-Exempt Monopoly,’ Calls Pulling Championship Games Over HB2 ‘Retaliation’
McCrory Charges NCAA Engaging in ‘Economic Threats’ and ‘Political Retaliation’
Republican Governor Pat McCrory Tuesday afternoon issued a scathing attack on the NCAA after the collegiate regulatory organization stripped North Carolina of all championship events in response to HB2.
“The issue of redefining gender and basic norms of privacy will be resolved in the near future in the United States court system for not only North Carolina, but the entire nation,” McCrory claimed.
“I strongly encourage all public and private institutions to both respect and allow our nation’s judicial system to proceed without economic threats or political retaliation toward the 22 states that are currently challenging government overreach,” he continued.
“Sadly, the NCAA, a multi-billion dollar, tax-exempt monopoly, failed to show this respect at the expense of our student athletes and hard-working men and women.”
U.S. Rep. Mark Walker, a Tea Party Republican, Tuesday also attacked the NCAA, calling its officials “elitists” and saying they are attempting to “extort” the state.
Some responses to McCrory’s statement:
@GovOfficeNC @PatMcCroryNC A lot happening for Pat in trying to discriminate against both black voters and the LGBTQ community. Hard job.
