Jimmy Carter: Jesus Christ Would Have Supported Same-Sex Couples Marrying (Video)
Former President Jimmy Carter says, “I believe Jesus would approve gay marriage.”
Former President Jimmy Carter sat down with HuffPost Live’s Marc Lamont Hill, who asked the Democrat if Jesus would have approved of marriage for same-sex couples.
“I believe Jesus would,” the Nobel Peace Prize winner said. “I don’t have any verse in scripture.”
Carter is also a Deacon and Sunday school teacher at his local Baptist church.
“I believe Jesus would approve gay marriage, but that’s just my own personal belief. I think Jesus would encourage any love affair if it was honest and sincere and was not damaging to anyone else, and I don’t see that gay marriage damages anyone else,” he said.Â
In 2010 Carter announced support for same-sex marriage. Last year, at a Michigan college, he reminded students that Jesus never discriminated against anyone.Â
But last year Carter also drew fire after saying that while he supports marriage equality, he felt it was a states’ rights issue. “I’m kind of inclined to let the states decide individually,” Carter said.Â
That statement was a change from one he had made earlier, saying same-sex marriage “should be a right nationwide.”
Carter, who served as President from 1971-1975, is promoting his latest book, A Full Life: Reflections at Ninety.
