Commissioners Adjourn Meeting To Avoid Voting To Ask God To Not Destroy Them Over Gay Marriage
One small Tennessee county’s anti-gay resolution was so toxic it made national headlines, and officials chose to not take a stand.
When Blount County Commissioner Karen Miller filed her resolution, she likely didn’t foresee she would be focusing the national media on her small Tennessee county of about 126,000 people.
But given the nature of the resolution, which states that they fully expect God to destroy America because same-sex marriage is now the law of the land, but ask Him to “pass by” and spare their little part of the country, national attention is exactly what she got.
Miller’s “Resolution Condemning Judicial Tyranny And Petitioning God’s Mercy†asks God to “pass us by in His Coming Wrath and not destroy our County as He did Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighboring cities.â€
Tuesday night a regularly scheduled county commissioner’s meeting began, but the first task was to pass the agenda on which her resolution was posted.
Commissioners immediately decided to not pass the agenda, thus avoiding the need to vote on the highly controversial anti-gay attack.
UPDATE:Â After Failure, Commissioner Still Hell-Bent On Asking God To Not Smite Her County Over Gay Marriage
About 100 supporters of equality, organized by the Tennessee Equality Project, were protesting outside the Blount County Courthouse, and other equality supporters, all wearing red, were inside.
As soon as the meeting was adjourned, someone in the audience yelled, “Cowards!”Â
It’s unknown if that person supports marriage equality or not.
The resolution can still be voted upon, since it was never defeated.
“Hours before the meeting,” local news station WATE reports, “a group of protesters from North Carolina pulled up to the Blount County Courthouse with signs of men kissing that read ‘Sin Against Nature SODOMY.'”
Miller’s resolution also says the county is “begging His favor in light of the fact that we have been forced to comply and recognize that the State of Tennessee, like so many other God-fearing States, MAY have fallen prey to a lawless judiciary in legalizing what God and the Bible expressly forbids.”
