Breaking: North Carolina Senate Passes HB2 ‘Repeal’ Bill
32-16
The Republican majority North Carolina Senate has just passed a bill that claims, wrongly, to repeal the state’s unconstitutional anti-LGBT law known as HB2. The vote was 32-16.

Lawmakers’ main goal for ramming this legislation, introduced just 12 hours ago, through the legislature is to meet the NCAA’s deadline. If HB2 is not repealed North Carolina will be locked out of the next five years of games.

Democratic Governor Roy Cooper supports the bill and is expected to sign it.
LGBT organizations are opposed to this legislation.
The bill does not actually repeal HB2. It also includes a nearly 4-year ban on cities and towns from enacting nondiscrimination ordinances. For more on what the bill does and does not do, see NCRM’s initial report.
The bill’s next stop is the North Carolina House of Representatives, which also has a GOP majority.
