Alabama: Top GOP Lawmaker Argues Same-Sex Marriage Too Expensive For Taxpayers
A top Republican lawmaker in Alabama is proposing a different, albeit ridiculous, argument to prevent loving same-sex couples from marrying.
Since the dawn of time – or, at least, the dawn of taxes – unmarried gay people have been subsidizing the lives of different-sex headed households, and gladly too, no doubt. After all, the taxes we pay to educate the youth of today will (hopefully) lead to intelligent lawmaker solving the nation’s problems tomorrow.
But now that some same-sex couples wish to marry, and gain the protections, rights, and responsibilities our different-sex peers are granted as a condition of birth, some conservatives are working overtime to try to derail equality.
Tale Alabama State Senator Del Marsh. As President Pro Tempore of the Alabama Senate, Marsh is one of the top lawmakers in the Heart of Dixie.
A small government conservative, Marsh’s campaign website is chock full of claims about how he saves money for the Alabama taxpayer, thanks to his astute business acumen.
Left off that list are his “small government conservative” votes over the past few years to “require drug testing for certain welfare recipients,” “establish requirements for medical care at abortion clinics,” “authorize charter schools,” “prohibit abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy,” and even “require schools to have a longer summer vacation.” Yes, longer.
These days though, Senator Marsh is clearly very concerned about same-sex couples breaking the very bank they’ve been disproportionally contributing to for centuries.
“You gotta look at the financial aspect of it,†Sen. Marsh said in an interview on WVNN’s the “Dale Jackson Show.”
“Let’s face it. If gay marriage is approved, I assume that those types of unions, those people would be entitled to Social Security benefits, insurance. Where does it end?,” he queried.
“I wonder if the federal government is looking at the actual cost to the government when they look at an issue like this,” Marsh added.

Fortunately, Senator Marsh need not waste any more sleepless nights.
Today, President Barack Obama released his fiscal 2016 budget, and it specifically ensures “all lawfully married same-sex couples will be eligible to receive Social Security spousal benefits, regardless of where they live.”
