  • 'Based Upon My Personal And Christian Beliefs': Ohio Judge Refuses To Marry Same-Sex Couple

A Toledo, Ohio judge has refused to marry a same-sex couple, citing his religious beliefs.

Toledo, Ohio Municipal Court Judge C. Allen McConnell on Monday refused to marry a same-sex couple. Carolyn Wilson, 51, and her partner came to the courthouse during the times posted on the court's website. When they arrived, they were told McConnell, the judge on duty, did not perform "these types of marriages."

Wilson says Judge McConnell never even bothered to speak with them, which made the situation even worse.

“If he would have taken the time to talk to us, it would have been a little more palatable,” she said, according to the Toledo Blade. "You wait so long for this opportunity," Wilson said of the right to marry. "Because we wanted to handle it civilly, we didn't think there would be any issue at all."

Fortunately, another judge agreed to marry the couple, who have been together for seven years.

Judge William M. Connelly, Jr. says his reading of the Supreme Court's ruling "says we are to perform same-sex marriages."

Wilson called the event on her wedding day “embarrassing,” saying it “put a damper on the day.”

UPDATE: 'Great Precaution Not To Offend A Minister': Couple Denied Marriage Explains Why They Chose A Judge

Judge McConnell issued a statement today explaining why he refused to marry the couple.

"On Monday, July 6, I declined to marry a non-traditional couple during my duties assignment," Judge McConnell's statement reads. "The declination was based upon my personal and Christian beliefs established over many years. I apologize to the couple for the delay they experienced and wish them the best. The court has implemented a process whereby same sex marriages will be accommodated. I will continue to perform traditional marriages during my duties assignment."

"I am also seeking advisory opinion from the Supreme Court of Ohio at this time as to whether or not I can opt out of the rotation. Upon receipt of the advisory opinion from Supreme Court, I will abide by its decision."

    Equality Toledo isn't satisfied.

“They didn't deserve to be humiliated; they didn't deserve to be inconvenienced,” Nick Komives, executive director for Equality Toledo says. “That's just wrong, and we won’t tolerate it. It is his duty to perform this ceremony, and if he's not willing to perform his duties, he needs to step down.”

Mr Gillespie, I hope you would do me the courtesy of acknowledging that no-one is more aware than I am about the truth of my own sexuality – as you are about yours. I know I was born gay and I don’t really give a damn whether you accept. that truth or not. I appreciate that fact does not fit into the Christian faerie tale which of course is why Christians hate us so much. – our existence is proof that it is a faerie tale – as does your rudeness..

    • commented 2015-09-11 14:39:57 -0400
What faerie tale are you referring to??? Maybe the tale where gay/lesbians believe they were born that way

If this was someone other than a Christian people would not care

these government ‘officials’ swore an oath to uphold the constitution before they took their places in government houses, to do their jobs. if they can violate that oath, what does that say about that oath?
citing religious conviction is hogwash. if they’ve swore on a bible to take office, but violate that oath, how can they claim ‘personal belief’ based on religion? that personal belief should have excluded them from performing a government job.
this mans’ race would’ve precluded him from marrying outside his race prior to 1967. so now he denies someone their ‘equal protection under the law’. because he and that trollop in kentucky are breaking the law and a law ratified by every state in the union under the 14th amendment.
equal protection can be based on colour and orientation and etc.

THIS WAS WRITTEN 680 years before CHRIST was born – WHO IS THIS SINNERS????
He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. (Isaiah 53:3-8 KJV)

      THIS ARE GOD’S LAWS !!!!!

      1. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them.
      2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain
      3. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work; but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; in it, you shall not do any work.
      4. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God gives you.

      10. You shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his *, or anything that is your neighbor’s.

Ben Elyon, you can call me names all you want, but when it comes down to desire to understand, You are the one with zero desire to truly understand. You are the type that take the Bible literally word for word, without studying it in depth and in context of cultural and historical relevance.

You regurgitate verbatim what others tell you they believe the Bible means. I’m pretty sure you’ve never read, let alone studied more than one translation of the Bible, unless you’ve read the NIV, or New Living Translations of the King James Version, which really aren’t anything more than the Kings James’s Translated into Modern English. Which is not what I’m talking about.

You do Understand that the Bible was Not written by God, but by Men, Decades after Jesus Died, so there is No Way Jesus could have “endorsed” what Mathew, Mark, Luke, John Paul and the other Writers included in their books and letters. (Also odd that All of the Writers/Deciples All have English/European Names not found in the Middle East during the time, but that’s a completely different discussion.)

You’ve also got to understand that The Bible we have today has been Heavily Edited, Rewritten, and Mistranslated by Man over Thousands of Years. There have been Words mistranslated, and Books entirely removed by the authority of Men to justify what they thought or believed in order to Control any given group.

Take for example the King James “Version” of the Bible. It’s right there in the Title,  it’s a version of the Bible that was Ordered to be  Interpreted, Translated, and Edited by an English King in order to Rule Over and Control the Subjects of his Kingdom, yet to this day it is still used by more Churches than any other “Version”.

The Bible we have today is the product of a Game of Telephone. You know, the game where one person tells another person something, who then tells another, and so on until the story has reached the other side of the room, where the story ends up being completely different than what it was originally.

For thousands of years the Bible was told orally from generation to generation, then translated and hand written for decades until the invention of the Printing Press. Now imagine that happening over Thousands of Years, among various Cultures and People who don’t speak the same languages, or have the same cultural beliefs or backgrounds.

Considering All of these Facts and Variables, tell me more about how those Six (6) Sentences in a Book Thousands of Pages Long make it Clear that what you say is "Our Father’s Will.

@tony…. #1 – 3, who gives a shit. #4, depends on their performance; we certainly aren’t to mindlessly grovel at the feet of abusive parents. And notice how there is no commandment to honor and protect children. #5, 7 and 8, humans figured out on their own using reason and empathy to develop good moral principles. They don’t need gods to know not to do these things.
      1. seems like America’s laws really AREN"T based on the commandments, are they? And good thing too.
      1. #10, coveting leads to motivation and innovation, and stimulates an economy. Or do you prefer strict socialism, where everything is provided so nothing is coveted? Also, what a sorry piece of work the bible is, lumping human beings with animals and property as something to be coveted. Classy.
