Conservatives Cry ‘Christians Are All Now Dred Scot’ And ‘Collapse Of Civilization’ Over Marriage

The list of comparisons Christian conservatives have made up to respond to the Supreme Court’s decisions last week supporting the rights of same-sex couples to marry is long, including “the collapse of Western civilization in one day,” and “Christians are all now Dred Scot.” And yes, Dred Scott — image, top, right) should have two “t”s.

Because clearly, Christians are all slaves who have wrongly been deprived their freedom by the Supreme Court.

WATCH: Rachel Maddow Battles Top Right Wing Conservatives On DOMA Ruling — And Wins.

James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, and later, the anti-gay hate group, Family Research Council (FRC), claimed that that marriages of same-sex couples “threaten the entire superstructure” of society.

“I believe it can come down,” Dobson said. “This has been devastating. Even if eventually legally we somehow walk it back a bit, I don’t see our ever completely recovering from what has happened here.”

No word on how conservatives plan to “legally somehow walk it back a bit.”

Tony Perkins of the FRC promised he has only begun to fight. “This is far from over,” he cried, claiming the Supreme Court “carjacked the nation” with their marriage rulings.

Bill Becker, an attorney who does work for the anti-gay Alliance Defense Fund (ADF, formerly the Alliance Defending Freedom) and the Discovery Institute said of the Court’s rulings on marriage, including the Prop 8 and DOMA cases, “We’re talking here about the foundation of civilization and I wrote today that I believe we’ve seen the collapse of Western civilization in one day.”

Meanwhile, Bryan Fischer, the public face of the certified anti-gay hate group, American Family Association, took to Twitter and unleashed a rant including these ludicrous claims:

And this interesting, possibly anarchy-supporting tweet:

To grasp the full mettle of Fischer’s “logic,” just read his post-SCOTUS marriage decision column that claims the liberal Supreme Court justices “are a batch of homophobic bigots who harbor malice in their hearts toward homosexuals.”

Other ridiculous comments to come out of radical religious conservatives included the claim that “the U.S. Supreme Court has become the most prominent hate group in the country,” by “accusing backers of traditional marriage of being motivated only by animus against homosexuals,” by Robert Knight, a senior fellow for the American Civil Rights Union (not the ACLU.)

“The American Civil Liberties Union,” Knight adds, “ran a full-page ad in The Wall Street Journal the next day, proclaiming jihad against the 36 states that aren’t in the ‘freedom to marry party.’ As for the freedom of millions who disagree? Ah, well. The jihad won’t stop with the same-sex counterfeit. If sexual complementarity is no longer a valid requirement, why should marriage be limited to two people?”

Of course, conservative politicians had to get in on the act.

Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-KS) — who has promised to introduce a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage — said last week that “every time” the Supreme Court “comes out with a decision, it’s just like a brand new constitutional convention — they’re making it up as they go along.” Huelskamp says the justices “rewrite this Constitution every chance they get,” calling the DOMA decision an attack on Jesus Christ.

Apparently, the gays got to Kennedy.

Good old Pat Robertson last week asked, “about Anthony Kennedy, does he have some clerks who happen to be gays?”

Of course, Robertson also compared the Supreme Court’s ruling to Sodom and Gomorrah — it’s practically an occupational requirement.

People who use the Bible to justify bigotry are such hypocrites. Have they read the Book of Ezra? Book of Isaiah (just to name a few)?

dakotahgeo July 1, 2013 at 9:02 pm

Right wing extremists don't care what the Bible says… unless it agrees with their point of view! These yokels are nutz!

Christianity is a religion whose very BASIS is persecution. So, it naturally follows, that if Christians don't get their way in everything, they claim are being persecuted.

Any breathing organism with the capacity for rational thought sees through this of course, because absolutely no rights of Christians are being abrogated whatsoever. What they are really upset over is that they can no longer openly, vociferously discriminate against GLBT people.

I am a 69 year old retired Christian minister and I swear, on a stack of Bibles, I have NEVER been persecuted in my life because I was a Christian. I've been persecuted for not being a right wing nut kissing the ass of Baal (the American christian Taliban), but never have I been persecuted for being Christian. What does that say about Dobson, Robertson, Swaggart, Perkins, Fischer, Becker, Mittens, Huckabee, and last but not least, Huelskampf (sic) from the state that doesn't have the IQ of room temperature Celsius?. And these jokers are Christians???? IIIIIIIIIIIII…. don't think so!!! No harm done to these 'boyz'!!! I get so tired of this religious balderdash!!!

I have put up with people like this my whole life. I can handle being called a lot of bad things but a few are beginning to get under my skin.
I am NOT a pervert. I do not wish to have sex with or marry an animal or an underage child.
My marriage is NOT fake or counterfeit in any way. It is very real. The paperwork is in order and the law is working on it but that is not marriage either. I love this woman. I have promised my heart and soul long before the paperwork and it has lasted almost 9 years. I will grow older with her and die in her arms no matter what.
That is marriage.

They are nothing but sore losers who will keep saying shit and being invited on TV to look like victims.
I wish ALL media would stop giving these crackpots a voice.
When was the last time they invited the KKK or has reported on them?
If ALL media stopped, they would have a harder time drumming up business or sheeple to support their lame cause.

Kudos to you and your partner. As a Christian, I firmly believe these right wing conservative christian Taliban types are our crosses to bear while we do our work for the Lord on this earth. We pity them, we pray for them, and we could even kick 'em in the lower bottom cranial area, if we could get close enough to them. However, that is not what Christ commands us to do. Keep on keepin' on and enjoy a most wonderful life together.

You know, I am a novice when it comes to Supreme Court rulings but I have to tell you, I am very familiar with the Dred Scott case and to be quite honest, this guy, as he is always been, is full of crap. When DOMA was passed, it made Dred Scott's out LGBT people. If you remember the language of the Tawney Court, it sparked a Civil War, out of its harshness and is comparable to what Justice Kegan read from the bench when she read the legislative reasoning for DOMA. If you remember the courtroom took an audible intake of breath. That gasp, is what any newbie court scholar does when they read the Dred Scott decision. Its so inflammatory and it flies into the face of everything America is and ever will be. We do not like discrimination in this country, we can't stand it, and for Tony Perkins, Bryan Fisher, and the rest of the evangelical people out there to keep pushing forward an arcane mind set shows that they are not the Dred Scott's here but are in fact, the Tawneys and are willing to sacrifice whatever it takes, to 'restore' what they think should be the law of the land. Its pathetic.

Please, please, please, pleeeeeeease make it a litmus test for 2016 elections.

If the Republican Party did follow through on that threat, it would probably be the last action they performed as a political party. Spanky and His Gang could probably run for office and win!

…Because clearly, Christians are all slaves who have wrongly been deprived their freedom by the Supreme Court…WAH! WAH! WAH! Walk a thousand miles in our shoes, asshole. Because of prigs like you we've been deprived our freedom forever. It's your turn. Unfortunately, what you're crying about isn't even true. Don't expect us to shed any tears for you because you deserve the same share of derision you've given us all these years.

Huelskamp: …it's just like a brand new constitutional convention…

Right. Putting the Constitution to its true use and form is a brand new idea, huh? This guy's gotten a little bit chubby living off our tax dollars. He needs his jaws wired shut (until he's removed from office). Actually, it is a brand new idea since it hasn't been done for the last living group of people hated by conservatives until now. No more living under the fake god's rule. This is not meant to condemn real Christians. You know what I'm talking about when I'm referring to the bigots.

I hope they're losing a lot of sleep and night and it makes their thought processes even dimmer and stupider than they already are. Many a night I've stayed awake wondering how these bastards got control of our government and what can be done about it?

They can petition the Supreme Court all they want to reverse its findings. Salia can go back down and talk to another crowd in South Carolina about what a travesty this was. It's not going to be reversed and once again the politicians are wasting millions of tax-payer dollars trying to force their will on the rest of us. And I'll bet Scalia doesn't mind those good church people being arrested n North Carolina for protesting against the harsh and demeaning bills they're forcing on the people. Not to mention their wanting to make it the first Christian state in the union.

I hope they stamp their feet and cry until their ankles crack and their eyes are forever reddened. The real Zombies of the U.S.A.

Did anyone teach Fischer the laws of logic? Does he understand the first thing about fallacious reasoning? He engages in what might be called the Ultimate False Equivalence, comparing the Dred Scott decision to the recent SCOTUS opinions on DOMA and Prop 8. The only thing they have in common is human beings denied their rights, and if Fischer had been writing when the Scott decision was handed down, he would have praised the Court, not condemned it. That's right, homophobia and racism go hand in hand. Most of the red states are in the South. Remember, these are same old white men who pushed for and upheld laws against whites marrying blacks. It was that fact, in part, that led African-Americans to eventually realize that gay rights are human rights, just as worthy of protection as their own. Formerly, many black people said "How dare you compare your struggle to ours: you don't have black skin." No, queers have pink skin, just like the Nazi armbands, only today they are worn around the heart.

Thank you, James, thank you. Very succinct and to the point. Conservative extremists are the crosses WE must bear to make the pathway smooth and straight for others… and we're doin' it, thank God!!!

Do they really expect anyone with a grain of intelligence not to see through their bullshit/ No one is being forced to do anything against his will by the SCOTUS decision. None of these so-called Christians are being forced to marry anyone of the same sex. They need to shut up and mind their owb\n businesss.
