In a formal ceremony today, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley signed into law SB212, the Fairness for All Marylanders Act, outlawing discrimination against transgender citizens.

The Baltimore Sun reports the governor signed the bill, guaranteeing transgender protections in matters of employment and housing, in what is expected to be the last public signing ceremony of his eight years in office.

Rick Madaleno amd Martin o'malleyGovernor O’Malley gave the pen he used to sign the transgender protection law to Democratic State Senator Richard Madaleno, (left with the governor) who fought for eight years to long years to get it passed.

“It provides important protections for people who are just trying to live their lives,” Senator Madaleno said after the ceremony. “They won’t get thrown out of their homes, out of their jobs, out of a restaurant, just for being who they are.”

Republicans are unsurprisingly up in arms over the Fairness for All Marylanders Act. They call it the “Bathroom Bill”, because it protects a person’s right to use the restroom for the gender with which they identify. They have launched a petition drive, hoping to collect enough signatures to put the law up for a vote in November.

House Minority Whip Kathy Szeliga, one of the bill’s leading opponents, complained to anyone who would listen that SB212 would have unintended consequences.

“The way this poorly crafted law was written allows a man, who sincerely believes in his heart that he is a woman, to have access to the bathroom, changing room or locker room where there are women and little girls. This is just not right!”

Complain as they will, Maryland becomes one of the few enlightened states to offer transgender protections. Well done!

The argument is a str8 mans issue. They are afraid that 1) they can't control themselves so some will do anything to get in the womens restroom and 2) that women can't take care of themselves. The first may be true but the second is not. It has nothing to do with LGB or T people.
Thank you Governor O'Malley and all who voted for fairness and equality.
