A Republican lawmaker responding to the introduction of a same-sex marriage bill this week in Minnesota held a press conference to set the record straight on gay people.

Look: Thousands Flood Minnesota (Yes, Minnesota) State House To Support Gay Marriage

“It’s an unhealthy, sexual addiction,” State Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen told reporters Wednesday:

“When we’re talking about gay marriage, we’re not talking about an immutable
characteristic like the color of your skin. Okay? The human genome map was completed in 2003. There is no gay gene. Okay? So the concept that you’re born that way and it’s an immutable characteristic is an unscientific lie.”

Rep. Gruenhagen also mentioned he has a friend who runs an ex-gay therapy clinic, which the Star-Tribune calls “a sexual addiction clinic.”:

“He helped many homosexuals and other people come out of the lifestyle.”

Gruenhagen’s voting record shows he’s anti-gay — having voted against a 2011 marriage bill, anti-tax, anti-abortion, and in favor of restricting voting rights.

The Republican press conference was a farce, filled with lies, and fear-mongering, slippery-slope bunk, and grandstanding.

Zack Ford at Think Progress adds:

When pressed by a reporter, Gruenhagen added. “It doesn’t matter what my opinion is. It matters what the scientific facts are… it is a sexual choice.”

Gruenhagen’s opposition to LGBT equality and science is nothing new. In 2011, he dismissed the work of biologist Alfred Kinsey, calling the late sexuality expert a “filthy, perverted unscientific liar” and calling for all of his research to be destroyed. Last year, he told a Tea Party rally that “the concept of sexual orientation was started by Sigmund Freud… he’s a pervert, he’s a moron in my opinion, and I don’t believe in anything that he came up with.”

Studies have shown biological causes for homosexuality and the American Psychological Association recognizes sexual orientation as an inherent trait that should be affirmed.

Sen. Hall, a minister, noted in the same press conference that while this bill specifically protects religious leaders’ right not to officiate at same-sex weddings, a future bill might take that protection away. “I personally will go to jail,” he promised, “before I ever perform a marriage to a homosexual.”

Congrats, Minnesoteans. Elected these completely unethical, homophobic, and clearly uneducated people is an embarrassment to your state. The ones that somehow got elected because they are ministers is another good reason why the clergy should never be allowed to be elected to public office. Not all of them are uneducated like these baffoons, of course, but these people make a complete jackass out of themselves! I just hope that the people of MN are smarter than these people and see through their intense hatred. Geez..

I was born lesbian.
Funny how those who do not believe in science will use outdated or fake studies to support their opinion.
They never offer support for the "long term damage" that is sure to happen. Funny how they tell people to look at other states and countries to see what is happening there knowing they won't. If they did they would not find much. Yes there are a few problems with business owners not wanting to serve LGBT people but it is their problem, not ours. I do not know of one case where a church or priest/pastor is being forced to do anything. They have always been able to decline marrying anyone for any reason.

More and more people are coming out and their families are learning that we are not the evil demons we have been portrayed as. Because every family has a LGBT member and they see the discrimination we face, more are supporting anti-discrimination laws and equality.
Our day is coming quickly and in time the rants from those who are ignorant will fade away.

There is no gay gene, so homosexuality is an unhealthy sexual addiction? Since there has been no straight gene found either, does that mean that heterosexuality is also an unhealthy sexual addiction?

Okay, so this guy says he's FOR science:

"The human genome map was completed in 2003. There is no gay gene. Okay? So the concept that you’re born that way and it’s an immutable characteristic is an unscientific lie.”….

Before being AGAINST it?:

Gruenhagen’s opposition to LGBT equality and science is nothing new. In 2011, he dismissed the work of biologist Alfred Kinsey, calling the late sexuality expert a “filthy, perverted unscientific liar” and calling for all of his research to be destroyed.

And then decides he's FOR IT AGAIN?:

When pressed by a reporter, Gruenhagen added. “It doesn’t matter what my opinion is. It matters what the scientific facts are… it is a sexual choice.”

That's EXACTLY what he's doing to get his view across to his followers. He uses and then dismisses science only if and when it serves his purpose. What a guy!

There are no gay genes. That's why I look like a dike. I just love having straight people beat the shit out of me, running me from state to state, city to city. I just love having to file lawsuits in Federal court while everyone else gets to enjoy life without shit disturbing twerps and leeches harassing them.
