The list of countries where homosexuality is illegal now jumps to 77, after India’s Supreme Court today decided — thanks to a case brought by Christian, Muslim, and Hindu religious conservatives — to ban gay sex. 1.2 billion people live in India.

The penalty for homosexual acts is death in Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Maldives, Mauritania, (Northern) Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, (parts of) Somaliland, Sudan, and Yemen.

Note that in most of these cases, religious law, including, often, Sharia law, is at the center of the edicts.
