Shimon Peres has served as the President of Israel since 2007. Before that, he was Israel’s Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Defense, Minister of Finance, Minister of Transportation, among several other elected and appointed positions. A Nobel Peace Prize winner, at 90 years old President Peres is the world’s oldest head of state.

On Sunday, President Shimon Peres announced strong support for same-sex marriage as a civil right that should not be taken away.

“Even a person who is a homosexual is a human being, and he has rights. We have no power to take away (their) rights,” President Peres told Ynet News while in Mexico. “We cannot take away someone’s rights because they are different. We cannot take away their right to breathe, right to eat or right to start a family. We must allow everyone to live as is natural to them.”

The Israeli parliament is in the early stages of taking up a civil partnership bill. Peres’ comments were in response to questions about the legislation.

Same-sex couples in Israel do not have the right to marry, although recent polls show the majority of citizens support the right.

The Washington Blade notes that a “measure that would have extended marriage rights to gays and lesbians in the country recently died in committee.” The Blade adds that Peres’ comments come “roughly a month after nine U.S. LGBT leaders traveled to the Jewish state with the American Jewish Committee’s Project Interchange. Washington Blade Editor Kevin Naff is among those who took part in the week-long trip.”

Also roughly a month ago, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), Congressmen Robert Aderholt (R-Ala.), Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), James Lankford (R-Okla.), Mike McIntyre (D-N.C.), Ted Poe (R-Texas) and Steve Scalise (R-La.) joined anti-gay hate group leader Tony Perkins in a very hushed trip to the Holy Land that was just reported days ago by the Christian Post.

Coincidence?

Absolutely.
