Cardinal Timothy Dolan says that the Catholic Church wants “happiness” for same-sex couples as well as for opposite-sex couples, but same-sex married couples are entitled only to “friendship” and not “sexual love.” Dolan admitted the Catholic Church has work to do in attracting gays and lesbians, but in an ABC News interview on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” that will air today, Easter Sunday, Dolan offered these thoughts:

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS:
– gay and lesbian Catholics, they feel unwelcome –

CARDINAL DOLAN:
They do.

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS:
– in the Church. And what do you say as a minister, as a pastor – to a gay couple that comes to you and say, “We love God. We love the Church. But we also love each other, and we –

CARDINAL DOLAN:
Uh-huh.

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS:
– want to raise a family in faith.”

CARDINAL DOLAN:
Sure.

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS:
What do you say to them?

CARDINAL DOLAN:
Well, the first thing I’d say to them is, “I love you, too. And God loves you. And you are made in God’s image and likeness. And – and we – we want your happiness. But – and you’re entitled to friendship.” But we also know that God has told us that the way to happiness, that – especially when it comes to sexual love – that is intended only for a man and woman in marriage, where children can come about naturally.

We gotta be – we gotta do better to see that our defense of marriage is not reduced to an attack on gay people. And I admit, we haven’t been too good at that. We try our darndest to make sure we’re not an anti-anybody. We’re in the defense of what God has taught us about – about marriage. And it’s one man, one woman, forever, to bring about new life. We gotta do better to try to dis – take that away from being anti-anybody. And – and I admit –

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS:
How do you do that?

CARDINAL DOLAN:
We haven’t been too good –

ABC News also reports ahead of the “This Week” airing, that “Archbishop of New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan told ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos that the Catholic Church’s very nature means it will be — from time to time – out of touch with the concerns of its followers.”

“Sometimes by nature, the Church has got to be out of touch with concerns, because we’re always supposed to be thinking of the beyond, the eternal, the changeless,” Dolan said. “Our major challenge is to continue in a credible way to present the eternal concerns to people in a timeless attractive way. And sometimes there is a disconnect – between what they’re going through and what Jesus and his Church is teaching.  And that’s a challenge for us.”

Dolan was responding to a question from Stephanopoulos about a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll, which found that 60 percent of Catholics “describe the church as ‘out of touch’ with the views of Catholics in America.”

As much of the country celebrates the Christian holiday of Easter, Stephanopoulos asked Dolan about the rise of people with no religious affiliation and if the church can bring people back toward God.

“What I’m afraid is that that’s afflicting society in general. That’s afflicting families. That’s afflicting — communities.  People want privacy.  People crave isolation.  We’re hearing parents say that they can’t even get their kids to talk anymore,” he said. “They’re – they’re tweeting one another.  So, this – kinda this craving of individualism, being alone, be – aloofness, that’s afflicting all of culture, all of society. We’re feeling it in the Church, too, because we’re not about ‘me.’  We’re about ‘us.’ We’re about the ‘our.’  We say ‘Our Father.’ But society is saying, ‘It’s me, myself and I.’”

"We got to be – we got to do better to see that our defense of marriage is not reduced to an attack on gay people. And I admit, we haven’t been too good at that."

He continued to do just that when he called them "friends" and insulted heterosexuals who cannot or will not produce children naturally. Not all marriages produce "new life", either they can't or they don't want to. They are still married in the eyes of the LAW, if they have the legal documentation.

Nope. It's not simply "friendship". It is romantic love which requires friendship. Period. No arguments. And according to American law he is not entitled to say what the American people are entitled to. More elitist trash from that fascist.

I guess my laughter is at the fact that the Catholic farce they call religion seemingly accepts sex with young boys and girls without punishment but worries 24/7/365 about gay marriage. And they wonder why church attendance is dropping like priests' and cardinals' pants!!!?

That man is the most repulsive creature, all the more sinister for his jolly fat boy image of smile. As one of the 60s rock groups had it, smiling faces sometimes tell lies. The wave of child molestation cases involving priests spread from the U.S. to every nation where the RCC holds mass. The previous pope was responsible for obstruction of justice and shielding his predecessor from day to day involvement in (1) moving priests around from parish to parish after a short rehab only to watch them rape more boys, (2) hiding Vatican secrets behind the diplomatic immunity they enjoy by treaty with the United States, (3) keeping the predominantly Catholic U. S. Supreme Court as a back-up when and if their evils and crimes are brought to "justice," and (4) closing down whole parishes to sell off real estate in hopes of paying off the victims of the pedophilia. This arsehole is one to talk about gays. He has plenty of priests under his control, and some only pretend to be married to Christ — so that they can chase altar boys.

Yeah … I see them attracting a lot of LGBT people telling them they have to deny what is natural … it's called LOVE, in all the expressions that LOVE possesses to be seen, privately and publicly, between two consenting adults … I really don't think any person, place or thing has any right to define what LOVE is, no matter who they are …

So glad I don't practice a religion that tells me which consenting adults I'm "entitled" to have sex with.
