Breaking: Anti-Gay Hate Group Supporter Tom Emmer Enters Race For Bachmann House Seat

Minnesota Republican Tom Emmer has just announced his intention to run for Michele Bachmann‘s congressional seat. Bachmann last week announced she will not seek a fifth term. Emmer, a former three-term state representative, talk radio show host, and anti-gay extremist, is well-known to the LGBT community.

In a failed 2010 race for the Minnesota Governor’s house, Emmer’s personal and financial association with Bradlee Dean, founder of Christian rock band, youth ministry, and anti-gay hate group You Can Run But You Cannot Hide (YCRBYCH) was revealed, as was a $150,000 donation from Target and a $100,000 donation from Best Buy, to a super PAC that heavily supported Emmer, directing great public outrage at Target, especially.

Patrick Kessler, political reporter for local Minnesota CBS affiliate WCCO broke the news:

The “MN DFL Party,” the Minnesota Democratic Farmer Labor Party, is essentially Minnesota’s Democratic Party:

Emmer’s anti-LGBT positions are extreme. He no doubt will work to repeal Minnesota’s new law that extends marriage to same-sex couples — for starters. Just after it passed, Emmer took to a local Minnesota conservative blog to write, “Why Do We Need A Law For Homosexual Marriage?

Rachel Maddow in August of 2010 shared some background on the Minnesota gubernatorial race and Tom Emmer:

Jason Linkins at the Huffington Post, before Emmer officially made his announcement, today wrote, “if you’re looking for a Bachmann replacement, you could do a lot worse than the evolution-denyinganti-gayPalin-endorsed Emmer.” Linkins adds:

Abe Sauer put together a comprehensive profile of Emmer back in 2010, when he was mounting his ultimately unsuccessful campaign to become Minnesota’s governor:

A Minnesota House of Representatives member since 2004, Thomas Earl Emmer Jr.’s positions are jarringly reactionary for a state where even the right prides itself on some degree of progressiveness. Called “Minnesota’s most conservative GOP gubernatorial candidate in decades,” it’s no surprise he likes to play with guns, or at least give the appearance of doing so. Not only does he support the state’s allowance of concealed carry, he introduced the Firearms Freedom Act, exempting Minnesotans from federal rules or regulations on their arsenals.

Emmer wants to cut government services by at least 20 percent. But poor people vote too, so how did Emmer propose cutting service costs without having to outright deny poor people access to state assistance? He authored bill HR857, which mandated drug screening for Minnesota Family Investments Program eligibility.

But he can be fun too. Emmer also authored bill HF1131, which greenlights surgical or “chemical” castration of sex offenders. Naturally, he’s not just anti-abortion-he authored a bill that said Minnesotans had “no constitutional right to abortion.” And, despite blaming the media for many of his woes, Emmer’s name is on bill HF0936, allowing “News media representatives to enter polling places for up to 15 minutes during voting hours to observe the voting process” and “make a list of persons voting or not voting.”

The race for Democrats just got easier.

Another grotesque blood thirsty parasite to replace a grotesque blood thirsty parasite.

This might actually be good news, because it sounds like the people of Minnesota have grown weary of the crazy. A reasonable Democrat has a fighting chance against this hate-monger.

I wonder if he knows his history and can look at the camera?
It is easier to right a wrong than it is to wrong a right or take one back.
It seems the GOP has learned nothing and getting worse.

While I agree that Tom Emmer is an abysmal politician and should be kept behind his extremist conservative radio pulpit, this race is by no means EASIER for Democrats. We need all the help and support we can get up here in the 6th District. No matter how sensible the DFL candidates have been in the past and present (and they are in every possible way BETTER for the District and the country), the Republican force is strong here.

Do whatever you can to support/publicize/send good karma to the DFL candidates in the 6th District. This race will be NATIONAL in its scope and we can't rest on Tom Emmer's insanity to put us over the edge – we've got to work harder than ever to find every last voter out there and show them why they need a sane, sensible representative working FOR them in Washington!

I think you are entirely correct. Fortunately a strong Democratic candidate is emerging.

Jim Read is also running to replace Bachmann. Jim is a Harvard Ph.D. and Eagle Scout. HIs web page is
